Obituary for Alfred C. Evans

Alfred C. Evans, 89, of Simsbury, CT, beloved and highly respected father, grandfather, uncle and friend, died peacefully Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at Hartford Hospital. He was born December 14, 1923 in Jersey City, NJ, son of the late William J. Evans Sr. and Leonora (Stickle) Evans, and predeceased by his wife, Joyce B. (Wichern) Evans, and son, Alfred C. Evans Jr.

Al attended Rutgers University prior to enlisting in the US Army in 1943 and served oversees as a radar mechanic in the Pacific Theatre -- New Guinea, Philippines and Japan. After his honorable discharge from the US Army in 1946, Al re-enrolled at Rutgers University under the GI Bill and earned a BS in Electrical Engineering in 1949. He went on to earn two Masters Degrees -- MS in Electrical Engineering from NJ Institute of Technology in 1951 and MS of Organizational Behavior from University of Hartford in 1983.
Al started his professional career in 1947 with Wallace & Tiernan in Bellville, NJ, and in 1957 joined Weston Electrical Instruments Company in Newark, NJ as Director of Engineering. In 1964 he relocated his family from Cranford, NJ to Simsbury, CT, after joining Veeder-Root Industries in Hartford, CT, as Vice President and Director of Engineering. Alfred was awarded four US patents: one dual indicating aircraft instrument while with Weston; and two mechanical counting devices and one special gasoline pump computer while with Veeder-Root.

Al loved spending quality time with family and friends, especially summer vacations at Lake Wentworth, NH and weekends at their summer cottage in Old Lyme, CT. He was a kindhearted, ethical, and generous person who valued family, education and hard work. Al was always warm and welcoming to everyone who visited their home and particularly enjoyed interacting with his children’s friends. In retirement, Al enjoyed activities provided by McLean in Simsbury, where he resided in the Burkholder Apartments since 2001. He loved working on his computer, researching information on Google, emailing friends, having monthly luncheons with close friends, daily breakfasts at his daughters’ homes, Thursday night family dinners at local restaurants, and sharing traditional holidays with family and friends.

Al is survived by his two devoted daughters, Nancy Evans Waggoner and her husband Andrew Waggoner of Simsbury, CT, and Barbara Lee Evans and her husband David Coope of Granby, CT; six grandchildren, Drew and Dana Waggoner, Lindsey (Evans) Okeson, Timothy Evans, Jeffrey Evans and Michael Evans; four great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the residents and staff of McLean for their warm friendship and caring support, as well as the Hartford Hospital doctors and nursing staff for their compassionate care.
The family will hold a private internment service at a later date. Donations in Al’s memory may be sent to McLean, 75 Great Pond Road, Simsbury, CT 06070. Please visit Al’s “Book of Memories” at www.vincentfuneralhome.com for online condolences.
