Obituary for
Stanley Paul Johnson
Stanley Paul Johnson was born in Hartford on September 30, 1941, alongside his twin brother, Clinton. He graduated from The Loomis Chaffee School, Class of 1959, attended Trinity College, and graduated from The University of Hartford in 1965. A week later he married Linda (Peterson) Johnson. This June would have marked their 50th wedding anniversary. Stan began his career working for IBM in Springfield and Pittsfield MA. It was evident from the start he had a talent for marketing. His success selling computers was recognized by IBM and launched a sales career that would shape his life. Stan left IBM when the opportunity arose to become Sales Manager for his family’s business, The Johnson Gage Company, in Bloomfield, CT. He devoted the rest of his life to the importance of measuring threaded components, working to ensure the integrity of these parts in safety critical applications. With his expertise, he served on committees to draft and adopt national standards for the measurement of threaded components. With his unwavering passion, he was able to market Johnson Gage’s products to the Department of Defense and NASA, as well as companies in the aerospace, defense and automotive industries. As an owner of Johnson Gage, Stan retired in 2005. Stan was also an inventor who patented an innovative gaging system called Thread View. He was founder and President of Thread View Systems LLC, a company formed to pursue the development of this non-contact vision inspection system. He received numerous awards for excellence in his work benefiting the gaging industry and belonged to a number of related organizations. Stan loved his family, his wife, Linda, and his daughters Kristin and Lisa. He was so proud of his children and his son-in-law David Stevenson. He especially loved watching his grandchildren’s activities, a constant and supportive presence on the sidelines, as well as in the recital halls. He will always be beloved “Poppa” to his grandchildren, Harry and Kate, who already miss him so much. Stan was passionate about his work, but when it was time to play, he had a number of hobbies. He looked forward to hunting and fishing excursions and would cheer for “his” UCONN basketball teams. He loved his dogs, especially, his chocolate lab, Mobee. He enjoyed power boating, always as fast as the boat would go, on Lake Pocotopaug, the family summer home, and later at his home in Florida. When Stan’s work with the aircraft industry sparked his interest in flying, he became a licensed pilot and purchased a Piper Archer. He found flying challenging and relaxing. Stan belonged to the Simsbury Fish and Game Club, the Simsbury Flying Club, and the Asylum Hill Congregational Church. He also served on the Board of Regents at The University of Hartford. Remembering Stan or Poppa will always evoke the “soft side” of this very special man, brilliant, driven, yet caring and sensitive. To know him well, was to deeply understand him and love him. Dad/Poppa/Stan/Milt, you will be looking down on us from that place we will all be one day…Safe flying, November 9083 Delta. Stan is predeceased by his parents, Paul and Irene, his sister Beverly, and his daughter, Kristin, and survived by his wife Linda (Peterson) Johnson, daughter, Lisa Stevenson, son-in-law, David Stevenson, and two grandchildren, Harry and Kate. In addition, he is survived by two brothers, twin Clinton Johnson and his wife, Kristina, of Suffield, and Lowell Johnson and his wife, Paula, of West Granby, brother-in-law John Peterson and his wife, Sandra, of West Hartford, and numerous nieces and nephews, family members and dear friends. The family wishes to extend a thank you to the staff and caregivers at St. Francis Hospital and The Reservoir who showed such unbridled compassion during these last few months. A celebration of the life of Stanley P. Johnson will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, February 26, at The Asylum Hill Congregational Church, 814 Asylum Avenue, Hartford, CT. A private burial will be held prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made, in honor of Stanley P. Johnson, to The Loomis Chaffee School, 4 Batchelder Road, Windsor, CT 06095. Please visit Stan’s “Book of Memories” at www.vincentfuneralhome.com for online condolences.
