Obituary for
Nicholas Vinocur
Nicholas Vinocur, 26, of Simsbury, CT died Tuesday, July 7, 2015. He was born January 10, 1989 in Hartford, CT, beloved son of Ross and Nancy (Moss) Vinocur of West Simsbury, CT. He was a graduate of Simsbury High School, Class of 2007, and attended SUNY Purchase. Nick passed away after a long, brave battle with heroin addiction. After seven months of sobriety, his longest ever, the drug took hold of him again. Through everything, his family never stopped believing in him and loving him and only wish that he could have believed in himself. To all of you who are facing this horrible scourge as the family or friend of an addict, please reach out every day and be there for him or her. Let them know how much you love them and that there is nothing they could do to lose that love. Temper any tough love with your tender support. To all of you who are addicted, never give up. A slip up isn't a failure, and you don't ever have to be ashamed.Nick was not just an addict. He was a loving son, brother, and friend. He loved hiking throughout New England. He loved music and was in the process of amassing a complete collection of anything to do with David Bowie. He dreamed of hiking the Appalachian trail one day and driving cross country and being an elementary school teacher. Although he was living in a sober house in Portland, Maine and trying to make a fresh start there, he loved his hometown of Simsbury. He looked forward to getting his own place again and taking in rescue rats. He wanted to make something of himself, and we hope he knew that he already had. He was the bravest person we knew. Besides his loving parents, he is survived by his sister Claire Vinocur and her wife Krista Hennings-Vinocur of Alexandria, VA, and by his sister Jane Vinocur of West Simsbury; his grandfather, Allen Vinocur; his step-grandfather, Jerry Schindlinger; his aunts and uncles, Bob, Pam, and John Moss and Michelle Karshan, and his cousins Bree, Eric, Leah, David, Grace, Caitlin, and Riva. There are no calling hours. Graveside services will be Saturday, July 18th, 1:00 PM at the Simsbury Cemetery, 16 Plank Hill Road in Simsbury, CT. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Connecticut Humane Society, 701 Russell Road, Newington, CT 06111 or at www.cthumane.org/donate.
