Obituary for Diederich Gottfried Iken Jr.

Diederich Gottfried Iken, Jr. (Dick), 80, of Collinsville, beloved husband of Josephine (Fischer) Iken, died Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at John Dempsey Hospital in Farmington. He was born February 20, 1935 in New York City, son of the late Diederich Gottfried Iken, Sr. and Martha (Olerich) Iken and had lived in Collinsville for the past 55 years. He was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1954 to 1957. He was a graduate of SUNY Farmingdale having received his Associates Degree in Construction Technology. Mr. Iken was involved in project development for Combustion Engineering for 36 years prior to his retirement in 1996. Dick was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Avon, a Charter Member and Troop Committee Chair for Boy Scout Troop 177 in Collinsville and a Metacomet District Eagle Board Chairman for Long River Council. He was also a Mason, a member of the Canton Historical Society and a volunteer for the Museum. He also supported many different organizations and events. Dick enjoyed making and sharing his homemade ice cream, photography, bird watching, camping and traveling with Jo and his family, and socializing.

Besides his loving wife of 55 years, he is survived by his four children, Lisa Lafferty and her husband Patrick of Schodack Landing, NY; Heidi O’Donnell and her husband Tim of Canton; Eric Iken of Monroe and Julie Sawyer and her husband Mark of Canton; his grandchildren, Christian, Jacob and Caroline Lafferty; Aidan and Liam O’Donnell; Ryan, Colin and Joseph Iken and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Marieanna Burlingame.

Friends may call at the Vincent Funeral Home, 120 Albany Turnpike in Canton on Sunday, August 30th from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A memorial service with military final honors will be held on Monday, August 31st, 11:00 AM at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 224 Lovely Street in Avon. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canton Historical Society, 11 Front Street, Canton, CT 06019 or to Boy Scout Troop 177, C/O Maurice Fry, 44 Cherry Brook Road, Canton, CT 06019.
