Audrey Hudson Winslow
Audrey Hudson Winslow, 87, of Simsbury, wife of the late Fenwick Merrill Winslow, Jr., died Sunday, November 1, 2015 at her home. She was born November 25, 1927 in Brooklyn, NY, daughter of the late Dr. Norman James Hudson and Hannah Elise (Winters) Hudson and had lived in Pittsburgh, PA prior to moving to Simsbury 43 years ago. She was a graduate of Fort Hamilton High School in Brooklyn, NY where she was voted “Best Dancer”. She went on to earn her Bachelors Degree at Bates College in Lewiston, ME, graduating with the Class of 1949 and had received her Masters Degree in Special Education at Central Connecticut State College. Audrey’s life mission was to be an advocate for learning disabled children and adults. Mrs. Winslow was a Special Education Teacher at Henry James Middle School and the Simsbury High School for many years prior to her retirement. She authored four Children's Books: "My Grandpa Says", "My Grandma Says", "It's OK To Be Different", and "Frog Parking…All Others Will Be Toad" and had a story published in Down East Magazine about the family clambake called "The Bakemaster". After earning a Grant from The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving for $50,000, she started an organization called SPALD (Supportive Parents of Adults with Learning Disabilities), which provided job counseling, socialization, and programs for learning disabled adults. She is survived by her two sons, Scott Winslow and his wife Valeria of Wellesley Hills, MA and Tom Winslow and his wife Cindy of The Villages, FL; her grandchildren, Catherine Anne Winslow, Stephanie Elaine Winslow and Nicholas Merrill Winslow and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Fenwick Merrill Winslow, III; her daughter, Janice Lee Winslow and her sister Yvonne Estelle Hudson. Friends may call at the Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury, CT on Friday, November 6th from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. A funeral service will be held Saturday, November 7th, 11:00 AM, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 11 Church Street in Tariffville, CT. A reception will follow. Burial will be at 3:00 PM in the Simsbury Cemetery, 16 Plank Hill Road in Simsbury. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to HARC, 900 Asylum Avenue, Hartford, CT 06105.
