Obituary for John Lewis Cannon

With profound sadness, we mourn the passing of Dr. John L. Cannon at the age of 92 on May 28th at his summer home on Cape Cod surrounded by the love, support and presence of his family and friends. A physician and teacher, he was born November 7, 1923 in Elsberry, MO to Margaret T. Cannon and Cecil W. Cannon and devoted his life to healing generations of patients. Educated in Elsberry public schools, where he was recognized with a Wall of Fame Award, he graduated Central Methodist College and Yale School of Medicine. John did his internship at Hartford Hospital where he met his wife, Doris S. Cannon, RN, a night nursing supervisor. He completed a fellowship at Emory University School of Medicine and served as a Flight Surgeon with the U. S. Navy at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, FL. After serving, John and Doris returned to CT and settled on Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury. Dr. Cannon practiced Medicine from the main street of Simsbury serving the community and providing care to generations for almost half a century. He served on the staff of Hartford Hospital until his retirement. He enjoyed the excitement and satisfaction of serving the health needs of his patients who presented a diversity of challenges and conditions. He served as School Doctor for the SHS athletic program, Simsbury Health Officer, Medical Director for Westminster School and the SVFD. He also worked with the SVNA and volunteer ambulance service. Always quick with a story of his latest project, his exploits as a youth in rural Missouri, his adventures hunting or fishing, his time as a ranger at Yellowstone, or his time on the water sailing. John enjoyed life and the people in his life. Influenced by his mother, John possessed a love of music and served as a Trustee and Chair of the Board of the Hartt School of Music and received a Fuller Metal recognizing his service. He further worked aiding his community on the Board of Regents of the University of Hartford, the boards of the Simsbury Bank and the Village Water Co., proud of his appointment as a Connecticut State Police Surgeon, supported the Simsbury Historical Society, Simsbury Free Library, Simsbury Land Trust, Simsbury Volunteer Fire Department and was a founding member of Hopmeadow Country Club. Dr. Cannon will be remembered not only as a caring and dedicated physician but as a loving husband, father, uncle and grandfather. He is survived by his sons James A. Cannon, PhD.; John L. Cannon, Jr.; his daughter, Dr. Cecily Cannon; his grandchildren Chelsea M. Schildbach, Ian M. Cannon and Samuel Cannon. He also leaves his nephews William O. Cannon, W. Joseph Cannon, Jr. and his niece C. Rebecca Carey. He was predeceased by his parents, his loving wife, Doris S. Cannon and his brother, Dr. Joseph Cannon. The Cannons wish to thank the caring friends who assisted John during his final years. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, June 5 from 4-7PM at Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Street, Simsbury.
