Mary Lester Sottile
Mary Gertrude (Lester) Sottile, 84, beloved wife of Frank Sottile, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 5, 2016. She was born December 23, 1931 in Great Barrington, MA, to the late George and Julia Lester, and raised in the small town of New Marlborough, MA, where she enjoyed the outdoors. She attended a one room schoolhouse and loved helping her mother, the town Post Mistress which fostered Mary's love for mail. She met Frank in her freshman year of college at UMass Amherst, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. She graduated in 1953 with a degree in English and later received her master's degree in Guidance Counseling from the University of Hartford. Mary and Frank were married on July 4, 1953 in Sheffield, MA. In addition to raising their children, Mary worked in real estate and supported Frank in his business ventures. They lived in Simsbury, CT for 54 years and later retired to Amherst, MA. Mary was an active volunteer with the Simsbury Women's Club, the Second Chance Shop, and St. Mary's Rosary Guild. Mary enjoyed worship and Bible Study at Valley Community Baptist Church in Avon. She was fond of photography and bird watching, was an avid reader, had a flare for colors and fashion, and loved sitting on the beach and watching waves. She delighted in entertaining family and was often found playing games with her grandchildren which gave her much joy. Frank and Mary traveled the world, with her favorite trips including Portugal, Italy, Canada, Hawaii, and spots along the East Coast from Maine to Florida. She is lovingly remembered by her husband of 63 years, Frank Samuel Sottile; her children, Angie, Lester, and Peter Sottile; her brother-in-law David; her grandchildren, Ginger Fowler, Georgia Jenkins and wife Kari, Megan Sottile and partner Mark Thibault, Matthew Sottile, Lauren Sottile and partner Sean Stellato, and Julia Sottile; and great-grandson Miles Samuel Jenkins. Mary was predeceased by her aunts, Helen T. Lang, Madeleine Current, and Gertrude "Dee Dee" Lang, and cousins of the Lester and Current families. A memorial service will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Monday, October 10th at the Vincent Funeral Home, 120 Albany Turnpike in Canton. Friends are invited to calling hours prior to the memorial, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Burial will be private.
