Warren Sommers
Warren A. Sommers, 96, of West Hartford, husband of the late Shari (Hill) Sommers, died Monday, November 14, 2016 at his home with his family at his side. He was born August 11, 1920 in Chicago, IL, son of the late Albert and Catherine (Tomala) Sommers and had lived in Harwich, MA prior to moving to West Hartford 14 years ago. He was a Navy Pilot during World War II, serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS Sangamon. During the Battle of Leyte Gulf he was shot down, wounded and rescued. Warren graduated with a Bachelors Degree from Illinois Institute of Technology and had received his MBA from the University of Chicago. Mr. Sommers was the Vice President of Operations for Ashland Oil in Tulsa, Oklahoma prior to his retirement. He was active in the YMCA, having been on the Board of Directors of the Division Street YMCA in Chicago. Warren enjoyed gardening, walking and hiking. He is survived by his children, Susan Turner of West Hartford, Kathleen Luchs and her husband Robert of Simsbury, Shari Wightman and her husband Robert of New Mexico, Patricia Cullison and her husband Richard of New Mexico and Robert Sommers of Tennessee; his son-in-law, Steven Apple; his sister, Gloria Cerone; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter Elizabeth Sommers. A private graveside service will take place in Island Pond Cemetery in Harwich.
