Obituary for Frederick A. Young Sr.

Frederick Arthur Young, Sr., 94, of Simsbury, died Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at his home with family at his side. He was born April 21, 1922 in Oil City, PA, son of the late Daniel Fletcher and Clara (Ruess) Young and had lived in Simsbury for the past 63 years. Fred was a graduate of Penn State University, Class of 1943, where he received his Bachelors Degree in Engineering. He was an accomplished gymnast and tied the world record for rope climbing while in college. After graduation, he worked as a Mechanical Engineer for Hamilton Standard for 43 years. He retired in 1986. Fred had many hobbies and interests. For many years, he was a member of the Hartford Archers. He loved archery, and won the State Championship title in 1953, 1954, and 1955. In 1954, his wife and archery partner Alice shared his accomplishment by winning the women’s title. After retirement, he joined the Bristol Gem and Mineral Club and learned to make cabochons and facet gemstones. He was known for gifting his handmade jewelry to almost anyone he struck up a friendship with. It was his way of sharing his love of creating beautiful things. He enjoyed spending time outdoors in nature, hiking, fly fishing, rock hounding and bird watching. He also loved to travel, and loved music, playing the piano and photography. Fred’s humor and wit were enjoyed by many, and earned him friends everywhere he went.

He is survived by his four children, Frederick A. Young, Jr. and his wife Linda of Soddy Daisy, TN, Thomas M. Young of Broken Arrow, OK, Susan E. Lundquist and her husband John of Great Barrington, MA and Margaret A. Adamec and her husband Robert of Granby, CT. He leaves sixteen grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren as well. He was predeceased by his first wife, Alice (Coffey) Young, his second wife, Patricia (Chartier) Jedrziewski Young and two brothers, Norman W. Young and Fletcher R. Young.

Friends may call at the Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury on Monday, December 19th from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Graveside service and burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, December 20th at the Simsbury Cemetery, 16 Plank Hill Road in Simsbury.
