Obituary for Sally C. Porterfield (Friesell)

Sally C. Porterfield (Friesell)
Sally F. Porterfield of Simsbury passed away quietly at home on January 18, 2017. She was born in Schenectady, NY on March 18, 1932 to Jane and Charles Friesell and grew up in Murrysville, PA. She was a graduate of Grove City College, earned her master's degree in English Literature and Theater from Trinity College and her PhD in English Literature and Theater from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Sally led an active and productive life as a loving wife and mother while engaging in many community and scholastic activities. From early youth she was a singer, actor and teacher with a beautiful mezzo voice and love of the theater. She loved to travel and enjoyed trips to Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Hawaii, Caribbean Islands, The British Isles, Europe and many corners of the USA. After teaching in many public schools in Pennsylvania, Caracas, Venezuela and Connecticut, she was Director of Theater Arts at the University of Hartford where she spent many happy and rewarding years with her loyal band of students. She was a founder and President of the Canton chapter of the League of Women Voters, president of the Simsbury Light Opera Company and President of the Jungian Society for Scholarly Studies. For many years Sally was on stage with SLOCO and other theater groups. She also wrote theater reviews for the Farmington Valley Herald and published several books and articles on Jungian theory. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Dean Porterfield, her sister Sandra Friesell of Export, PA, her children: Ann Porterfield of Eugene, OR, Jane Porterfield and her husband Gerry Pastor of Simsbury and Matt Porterfield and his wife Keith Porterfield of Annapolis, MD, her grandchildren: Brendan, Dean, Graham and Gwen Pastor of Simsbury and Kate, Jack and Lia Porterfield of Annapolis, MD and Great Grandchildren Christina and Dylan Pastor of Simsbury and her poodle, Nora, all of whom love and miss her enormously. A celebration of life will be held at the Powder Forest Meeting House in Simsbury on Saturday, January 28 at 2pm. Donations can be made in her name to Planned Parenthood and the Southern Poverty Law Center.
