Obituary for Melinda Ramsby

Melinda Ramsby
Dr. Melinda Lee Ramsby passed away quietly at home in Avon, on February 2, 2017. She was born in Benton Harbor the summer of 1955, just a stone’s throw from the family cottage on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. Melinda is predeceased by her parents, Dr Gale R Ramsby and Suzanne Smith Ramsby of Branford CT. She has by two brothers, S Quinn Ramsby and G Shannon Ramsby of Branford, and a sister, Dr Synthia R Andrews, of North Guilford. Melinda is survived by husband, Dr Gregory S Makowski and three wonderful daughters, Kayce R Lyles of Simsbury, Nyle R Dwyer of Port Washington NY and Stephanie R Makowski of Avon. She has two extraordinary sons-in-law, Christopher Lyles and Henry Bodenheimer, a unique brother-in-law, Colin Andrews and a very special sister-in-law, Deanne Ramsby. Melinda has been fortunate to have met and enjoyed two beautiful grandsons, Hudson Paul Lyles and Ryder Parker Lyles, and hopes the world for granddaughter, Ayla Lee Bodenheimer, who will be joining the family in June.
Melinda was a physician scientist by every measure. She received a BS in Biology University of Bridgeport and a MS in Nutritional Sciences and a PhD in Biochemistry University of Connecticut Storrs. She was a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Pathology University of Connecticut School of Medicine Farmington and the Bone Biology Research Department at St Francis Hospital and Medical Center Hartford. She obtained an MD University of Connecticut School of Medicine Farmington, was a resident in Internal Medicine and a fellow in the Division of Rheumatology in the Department of Medicine. She was board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine with a sub-specialty in Rheumatology. Following her formal training, she opened Farmington Valley Arthritis & Rheumatology, a solo office in Avon not far from home. Melinda loved the practice of medicine, her patients and colleagues as well as the stimulating research it engendered.
Melinda loved spending time with family and vacationing together. She was an avid life-long swimmer and thought this activity essential for healthy life and well-being. Wednesdays were reserved for walks with the family dogs and indulging her grandsons. She enjoyed hiking the trails of Connecticut, but her most favorite was Glacier National Park in Montana. To celebrate her 60th birthday, 20 miles of the most strenuous and demanding trails were hiked and the sunset watched on Going-to-the-Sun Road. Melinda loved gardening and growing vegetables, tennis, skiing, antiquing, geology and very long walks along Lake Michigan.
Melinda was an ardent supporter of the historical timeline and the outdoors. As such, she would prefer donations to Old Sturbridge Village, 1 OSV Road, Sturbridge MA 01566 or Glacier National Park Conservancy, PO Box 2749, Columbia Falls MT 59912 in lieu of flowers.
A memorial service will be held in The Chapel at The Ethel Walker School in Simsbury on Friday March 10 at 5:00 pm. Please rsvp to [email protected] so that we may plan accordingly.
