Dr. Anne Holloway Rideout, beloved wife of Kenneth Rideout of Simsbury, CT, passed away on Monday, May 22, 2017. Born August 13, 1937, the daughter of Carolyn Cook and Eugene Cleveland Holloway, Jr. She is survived by her husband Kenneth Rideout; her sister, Harriet Raley and husband Charles of Searcy, AR; her brother Eugene Cleveland Holloway, III and wife Sally of Annapolis, MD and many nieces, nephews and their families.

Dr. Rideout’s father died in an automobile accident when she was five years old. She and her siblings were raised by her mother who instilled in them the idea of a good education was key to a successful life. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Murfreesboro Central High School in 1955 and from Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) in 1959. She received a Masters Degree from the University of Connecticut (UConn) in 1968, and a Doctorate Degree in Administrative Management from the University of Massachusetts in 1974.

After graduation from MTSU she worked for GE in Pittsfield, MA as a technical writer before moving to Connecticut to work with Cooperative Extension for the University of Connecticut. From 1960 until 1973 she worked in the Cooperative Extension and 4-H Programs for UConn. She became Assistant Director of the programs before leaving for her doctorate work at UMass. After receiving her Doctorate Degree, she worked at UMass as the Assistant Director of Cooperative Extension for four years before returning to UConn as the Associate Director/Dean of Cooperative Extension and Professor Emeritus of Home Economics. One person who worked with her said "She was an early role model for women in Extension leadership, and a class act who will be missed by all those who got to work with and for her". Dr Rideout's work touched the lives of hundreds of people in Connecticut and beyond. Her gracious manner and professionalism were inspiring to all who knew her.

During her tenure at UConn, Dr. Rideout served on the State Board of Agriculture and the Board of Trustees for the National 4-H Foundation. She was President of Epsilon Sigma Phi nation honor fraternity. In 1985 she was named one of the alumnae of the year for MTSU for her service to her community. In 1984 she was asked by USDA to join a trade mission to rural China to explore ways to improve agricultural trade between the two countries. She received the Ruby Award from the American Home Economic Association, the society’s most prestigious award. She was the first woman in the U.S to head the Cooperative system of a land grant college. In 1986, Dr. Rideout was invited by the International Association of Home Economics to give their keynote address in Manilla in the Philippines. While there she and her husband Ken traveled for three weeks in the Philippines, Hong Kong and Japan. Dr. Rideout retried from UConn in 1992

Dr. Rideout’s avocation was painting. She was an accomplished artist and worked primarily with pastels and acrylics. l. Her work will be displayed at McLean Health Center in Simsbury in October. She was an active member of the Manchester Church of Christ until her illness prevented her from travel.

A memorial service will be held at the Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury, CT at 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 27th. Friends are invited to call prior to the service, starting at 1:00 PM.
