Obituary for Sophie J. Guardia

Our world is sadder today with the passing of our beloved mother, Sophie Josephine Guardia, on June 30, 2017. Sophie was the ultimate New Yorker with her quick wit, original sense of humor, wise advice, and humble beginnings. Born at home in Brooklyn on November 23, 1917, she moved with her parents to a house in Ozone Park where she would live for the next 92 years. There was laughter, music, and love in that house from the beginning. Sophie enjoyed listening to books on tape and crocheting, donating many of her afghans, lap blankets, and scarves to her family and to the needy. Sophie belonged to the Nativity Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Ozone Park where she was involved in the Women’s Guild. She was also a member of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church in New York City, a Slovenian Catholic church. It was there in the choir that she met the love of her life, Charlie. She is predeceased by her parents, Mary and Joseph Lenarcic, her husband, Charles Guardia, Sr., her three sisters and brother. She is survived by her children, Christine Kopyt and her husband, Joseph, and Charles Guardia, Jr. and his wife, Joanne. She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Dr. Lauren Kopyt-Chase and her husband, William, Jacqueline Kopyt-Blesso and her husband, Thomas, and Dr. Charles Guardia III and his wife, Jacqueline, and the latest joys of her life, her Great-grandchildren, Samuel, Lily and Charlotte, and Jillian and Charles IV. She has many nieces and nephews who will miss her always for her laughter, jokes, and wisdom. A memorial service will be held at Romanelli’s Funeral Home in Ozone Park, New York on Friday, July 14, 2017. The Mass of Christian Burial at Nativity B.V.M. will be on Saturday, July 15, 2017 followed by an inurnment at St. John’s Cemetery in Middle Village, NY. Memorial donations in Sophie’s name can be made to the Office of Development and Communications, Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens, 191 Joralemon Street, 12 Floor, Brooklyn, NY 11201, www.ccbq.org.
