Obituary for Margitta Dahlberg (Felske)

Margitta Eveline (Felske) Dahlberg passed peacefully after a recurring illness on August 10, 2017 at her home in West Simsbury, CT, in the presence of family members. She was born on June 24, 1945 in Berlin, Germany, the daughter of Erich and Bertha (Schulz) Felske. She graduated from the Bertha-von-Suttner-Schule, where she obtained her Abitur, and began her first semester at the Berlin Pedagogical Institute. Her interests included art and art history. She had multiple pen pals around the world, including one in Hawaii, with whom she began corresponding when she was 15. They finally met when he traveled to Germany three years later. After two more years of writing she came to the US in the summer of 1965, solely to attend his college graduation, meet his parents, and see a bit of the States. ‘Twas not to be: they were in love, married, and she remained. With a resolute heart she wrote her parents, “Send me the winter clothes, I’m not coming back”. She lived in several states during her initial years here, as well as twice in Germany, the first time for a year in Berlin with her three children while her husband was in Viet Nam, and later for four years in Frankfurt, where he worked for an American company. They settled in Simsbury in 1981. She attended Central Connecticut State University, majoring in information sciences, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science, cum laude. She participated in various groups including the Simsbury Newcomers Club and her kaffee klatsch friends, and worked as a volunteer at The Village Second Chance Shop. She was active, enjoying tennis, paddle tennis, skiing, golf, tai chi, and bridge. Her real joy, however, was travel: together with her husband, family, and sometimes girlfriends, she traveled to and visited over 35 countries on 5 continents. She was friendly and gracious, but everyone knew she was also forthright and strong-willed, which served her well to the very end.
She is survived by her husband Charles of 51 years, of West Simsbury, CT; daughter Anja and husband John D’Angelo of Manhasset, NY; sons Gunnar of Waikoloa, HI, and Lars of Chicago, IL and her grandchildren, Sophia, Kristin, and James D’Angelo of Manhasset, NY. She was preceded in death by her brother Alfred, and leaves a sister-in-law Edeltraud, and niece Petra, of Peiting, Germany.
Calling hours will be held at the Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury on Thursday, August 17th from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Service and burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Farmington Valley Visiting Nurses Association, 8 Old Mill Lane, Simsbury, CT 06070.
