Obituary for Catherine M. Geiger

Catherine “Katie" (Murphy) Geiger, 83, of Otis, MA and Marco Island, FL, died Friday, September 1, 2017 surrounded by her family. She was born February 28, 1934 in Hartford, CT, the daughter of the late Catherine Murphy and Owen L. Murphy, MD of Simsbury, CT. Katie was the beloved wife of the late Richard "Dick" E. Geiger. Katie was a retired Registered Nurse where she had worked and taught at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, CT; served as the nurse for the Simsbury school system and also as a past nurse for the Girl Scout Camp Bonnie Brae in Otis, MA. She received her nursing degree at Catholic University and earned her Master's degree in pediatrics at Boston University. She also sold nursing textbooks for Lippincott Publishers. Katie spent many years as a volunteer EMT for the Town of Otis Ambulance Association. She was a member of the Big Pond Association, former Selectman for the Town of Otis and former member of the Blanford Ski Patrol. She also participated in a humanitarian mission to Peru as a nurse on the hospital ship USS Hope. Katie enjoyed traveling the world with her husband Dick in their RV. She enjoyed knitting, sewing and quilting, making many wonderful items for her nieces and nephews. She enjoyed skiing in the winter and over the years boating on both Big Pond in Otis, MA and on the waters around Marco Island, FL.
She was predeceased by her sister Mary Ellen (Murphy) Cormier of Winsted, CT and brother Owen Philip Murphy of Simsbury, CT. She leaves the following nieces and nephews: Daniel J. Cormier of Marco Island, FL, Catherine Cormier-Cleaveland and husband David of Winsted, CT, Robert J. Cormier and wife Shari of Colebrook, CT, Patricia E. Desmond and husband Bruce of Hummelstown, PA, Mary Ann Buchanan and husband Charles of Colebrook, CT, William A. Cormier of Winsted, CT, Ellen C. Marino and husband Concetto of Winsted, CT, Elizabeth C. Nardi and husband Tim of Canton, CT, James L. Cormier of Huntington, CT, Ann O'Donnell and husband Brian of Simsbury, CT and Owen J. Murphy of Simsbury, CT. She also leaves many grandnieces and grandnephews. The family would like to thank the staff of Porchlight VNA/Home Care, Home Instead and McLean Care for their compassionate care and support of Katie.
Friends may call at the Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury on Monday, September 4th from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, September 5th, at St. Mary’s Church, 946 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury. Burial will follow in Simsbury Cemetery.
