Obituary for Cynthia L. Channon (Larkin)

Cynthia L. Channon (Larkin)
Cynthia Larkins Channon (92) went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at the McLean Home in Simsbury, CT. Death was caused by complications of end-stage dementia.

Cynthia was born on November 20, 1924 in Southington, CT. She graduated from Southington High School in 1942. She met her husband, William P. Channon, in 1943 in Florida during WWII. They were married from June 7, 1947 until his death on April 21, 2010.

Cynthia was a faithful, loving wife and mother and an excellent homemaker. She loved to sew, knit and crochet. Her husband was Founder of the formal music program in the Simsbury Public School System and Director of Music. Among other performing groups, Bill led the marching band at Simsbury High. Cynthia assisted the marching band students by making sure their uniforms were properly fitted and kept in good condition for each performance.

Cynthia taught Sunday School at First Baptist Church in Southington during the 1960s. She also taught Sunday School, and was youth leader, at Emmanuel Gospel Church in Newington in the 1970s. For 15 years she was secretary to John Barney, the Director of Stewardship for the Africa Inland Mission, whose office was located at Calvary Church of West Hartford.

Cynthia and her husband composed fine Christian music, and she was the lyricist for those compositions. Bill wrote the music, and Cynthia wrote the lyrics, for a composition called “Connecticut”, which they entered into a contest for State song in 1970. The song was also performed many times by the Simsbury High School chorus during the years her husband was teaching.

Cynthia is pre-deceased by her parents Arthur and Ada (Cockayne) Larkins; her husband, William; her sister, Margaret Galayda and brother-in-law, John Galayda; and a son-in-law, Sigmund Rydelnik. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Alice (Channon) Kaufman and brother-in-law, Fred Kaufman. She is also survived by her three children Cynthia Rydelnik (Sigmund - deceased) of Schenectady, NY; Corrine Cunha and her husband Victor of Vernon, CT, and Mark Channon and his wife Elaine of Meriden, CT; five grandchildren David Rydelnik, Kristen Wells and her husband Arthur, Pamela McKenna and her husband Owen, Olivia Channon and Diana Channon; four great-grandchildren, eight nieces and nephews, and many great-nieces and nephews.

The Channon family would like to thank the doctors, nursing staff, aids and the Hospice staff at McLean Home for the considerate and compassionate care they gave Cynthia over the nine years of her residence at their facility.

The burial service will take place at Wonx Spring Cemetery on Marion Avenue in Plantsville, CT at 9am on Wednesday, October 18th. A memorial service for Cynthia will follow at 11am at Valley Community Baptist Church, 590 West Avon Road, Avon, CT with Rev. David Boehm officiating. A luncheon for family and friends will follow at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Word of Life Fellowship, Box 600, Schroon Lake, NY 12870. The Vincent Funeral Home of Canton is caring for the arrangements. Please visit Cynthia’s “Book of Memories” at www.vincentfuneralhome.com for online condolences.
