Obituary for Doris Zumbroski (Kubik)

Doris (Kubik) Zumbroski, 92, lifetime resident of Avon, beloved wife of the late Bernard A. Zumbroski, passed away on Sunday, January 14, 2018, at Avon Health Center, with her loving family by her side. She was born on May 16, 1925, in Avon, CT; daughter of the late Frank and Mary (Shilosky) Kubik. Before retirement Doris was employed as an Executive Secretary to the CT Attorney General, following several positions with the CT State legislature, and also held her CT real estate license. Throughout her lifetime Doris served on many boards and committees, including the Avon Democratic Town Committee, the Chalker Beach Improvement Association, and most recently the Old Saybrook Water Pollution Control Authority. Doris enjoyed summers at the beach in Old Saybrook with her friends and family, traveling, gardening, sewing and crafts, bike-riding, playing cards, practicing violin, cooking, antiquing, numerous home-improvement projects, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She had a zest for life and learning, and was always taking on new challenges and adventures, even in recent weeks. Doris's memory will always be a blessing for all who knew and loved her. Her energy, wit, generosity and engagement in life is a testament to successful aging and a life well-lived. She is survived by two daughters, Sandra Gatti and her husband James of Old Saybrook and Jan Cohen and her husband Michael of Avon; grandchildren, Katrina Shapiro and her husband Derek of Michigan, Melissa Gatti of Chester, Justine Gatti of Old Saybrook, Daniel Cohen of Avon and Julia Cohen of Avon; a great-grandson, Tallis Shapiro of Michigan, who shares his great-grandmother's birthday; and two nieces, Cynthia Zils of Maine and Maureen Amaral of Avon and their families. She will also be remembered by those dear to her as a strong, one-of-a-kind woman, a loyal friend, surrogate-mom, and mentor. In addition to her husband Bernard, Doris was predeceased by two brothers, Francis and Donald Kubik. Relatives and friends may join the family for calling hours on Thursday, January 18th, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Vincent Funeral Home, 120 Albany Tpke, Canton, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 19th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick Church in Collinsville. Burial will be held in the spring.
