Obituary for Regina Germond Schaal

Regina Germond Schaal, 1/26/29 - 2/18/18. Regina came into the world during a blizzard and left during a snowstorm. During the 89 years in-between, she was a beloved daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, friend, mother and wife. She was “My Regina” to her loving husband, Harold B. Schaal, who predeceased her in 2011. Her parents James E. and Pauline S. Germond, along with brothers Paul, James, Bart and sister Marie, are united with her again.

Her priorities were clear - family first. Her Vermont roots were entwined throughout her Connecticut home, ranging from the transplanted yellow rosebush to the ironstone china that had once graced her grandmother’s table. She was a model of selfless care for others, ensuring that everyone who entered her home was welcomed by an open fire, had a large slice of their favorite homemade pie and their heart warmed by a huge smile, twinkling eyes, and a quick laugh.

She was born in Sudbury, Vermont on the family dairy farm where she spent her formative years and, not surprisingly, developed a love of ice cream. As a young woman she worked as a telephone operator for SNET Co. where she met the love of her life and husband of 62 years. As newlyweds they built their home in Avon, CT. After her children were grown she was employed by Society for Savings in the banking industry. In her retirement years, she and Harry traveled extensively and then spent numerous hours with their cherished grandchildren attending many events during their young lives.

Her family is left with countless cherished memories of this very special lady, especially her passion for skiing, the warmth of a fire, and most importantly how to make the perfect apple pie.

Regina is survived by son Kevin Schaal and his wife Sheri of MT, daughter Cynthia Johnson and her husband David of CT, grandson Tyler Johnson and his wife Callie of CO, granddaughter Stephanie Johnson of CT, great grandson Seth Johnson of CO, as well as numerous nieces and nephews scattered throughout the U.S.

“My Regina” will be buried with her husband in Vermont. There will be no calling hours. A funeral mass will be held in St. Mary’s Church at 38 Carver St. in Brandon, VT on Saturday, May 19th at 10 AM. Burial will follow immediately in St Mary’s cemetery. In lieu of flowers please donate to Fisher Center for Alzheimer Research Foundation ([email protected]) in memory of Regina. Funeral arrangements are being directed by the Vincent Funeral Home of Canton, CT.
