Obituary for Mary Figulski
Mary Geraldine (Scully) Figulski, 85, of Simsbury, wife of the late Robert Thomas Figulski, died Sunday, December 13, 2020 at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford due to complications of COVID-19. She was born April 19, 1935 in Detroit, MI, daughter of the late Martin Gerald and Martha Lillian (Pohorsky) Scully and had lived Westland, MI prior to moving to Simsbury 49 years ago. Above all, Mary was a wife and a mother. She met her husband-to-be, Robert, while working in the typing pool at Travelers Insurance in Detroit, Michigan. It was the loving bond she formed with him that cemented Bob’s decision to settle in Detroit post-Korean war and start a family with Mary. She was a devoted wife to Bob for 64 years until his death this past August. They cherished each other and demonstrated their adoration each and every day.
Always putting the needs of children and grandchildren at the forefront, Mary showered her family with tenderness and love. Although never interested in the crowds at typical gathering spots, Mary was very social and loved connecting with friends in smaller, more intimate settings. When she moved to Connecticut in 1971 she maintained her strong friendship bonds by staying in touch the old fashioned way, writing letters. A friend of Mary was a friend for life. In recent days, when confined to home, she also formed deep and loving connections with her caregivers.
Mary loved baking, especially cookies. And she loved learning from Bob’s mother how to prepare Polish food. She loved taking long walks through Town with Bob early in the morning, greeting other regular walkers all along the way. When Bob retired from his job in Insurance, Mary loved traveling with him to far away places. She also loved getting out close to home, and was regularly in attendance at Simsbury’s Independence Day symphony concert and fireworks.
Mary is survived by her sons, Michael Figulski of West Hartford and John Figulski and his wife Nancy of Viera, FL; her grandchildren, Nicole Figulski, Justin and Ryan Markey, Kevin, Shannon and Maggie Barnard and Sara Martin; a great granddaughter, Memphis Martin; her sisters, Janet Marie Johnson of Novi, MI and Patricia Ann Hency of Shelby Township, MI and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her beloved husband of 64 years, Mary was predeceased by her daughter, Tamara Barnard and brother-in-law, Kenneth Hency.
A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial for both Bob and Mary will be held at St. Mary’s Church in Simsbury, at a later date.
