Obituary for Merl D. Young

Merl D. Young, 84, of Westfield, MA, beloved husband of Joan (Eckert) Young, died Monday, June 11, 2012 at Westfield Care and Rehabilitation Center, Westfield, MA. He was born September 24, 1927 in Hartford, son of the late Abner and Edith (Shepard) Young and had lived in the Farmington Valley area before retiring to Virginia, then moving to Westfield this past year. He was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1948. Merl was a past member of the Avon Volunteer Fire Department for 10 years. He always enjoyed cowboy and western shows and movies and, after retirement, light farming.
In addition to his loving wife of 31 years he is survived by his three sons, Major (Retired) Duane C. Young, PhD. of Virginia, Bruce M. Young of Connecticut and Gordon M. Young of New Hampshire, his daughter, Cynthia Y. Lemire of Massachusetts, three step-sons, David Balsewicz of Massachusetts, Donald Balsewicz of Connecticut and Keith Balsewicz of Connecticut; his brother, Melbourne Young, of Virginia; 12 grandchildren, six great grandchildren, two nieces and one nephew.
There are no calling hours. A graveside service and burial with military honors will be Friday, June 22nd , 10:30 a.m. at the Simsbury Cemetery, 16 Plank Hill Road, Simsbury, CT.
