A story for my brother.

When someone you love dies, you come up with all kinds of stories about what they are doing now that they are up in Heaven. You imagine them meeting up with their deceased family and friends, and have them laughing at us here back in the land of the living. It helps us, it comforts us to imagine these things. My brother Jimmy just died, and I've been imagining all kinds of scenarios for him, but here's the one that I believe is true. And even if it's not, it's my story, so it's true for me. I see a street corner, and I realize that I'm looking at a school bus stop. It's late afternoon, pretty warm; in fact it's the last day of school. There's a dog lying down in the grass, in the shade of a big tree. She's a black lab, and she has her head on her front paws; it's obvious that she's been waiting all day for something. Every once in a while she'll hear a slight sound and she'll raise her head and give a hopeful thump of her tail, but she settles down again when it turns out to be nothing. After a while there's this sound of a motor; it's still far away, but I can tell it's a school bus. So can the dog; she raises her head and looks expectantly down the road, and it almost looks like she's beginning to smile. The tail starts wagging while she's still sitting, then wags harder as she stands, and when the bus finally comes around the corner her back end is moving so furiously that it looks like she's dancing! Since this is my dream, I'm going to say that written across the side of the bus are the words "Tootin' Hills School." There's a young boy on the bus, about ten years old, crew cut red hair with a cowlick on his forehead. He's a little dirty (actually, maybe more than a little!), but he's happy. He doesn't have a backpack because he doesn't have any homework - it's the last day of school, after all. And besides, he's finally, truly home! Anyway, he jumps off the bus, and the dog is going wild! She runs around him, and jumps all over him, and finally knocks him down and starts kissing him all over. The boy is laughing so hard he's crying! "Digger!" he cries, "Digger! It's you!" And before he can get completely up from the ground another dog, a golden one, comes flying out of the woods. She's thrilled, she's been waiting SO LONG for her boy, and she throws herself at him. This is too much, this is wonderful! "Jinjer! My Jinjer!" yells the boy. Then there's a sudden mad rush from the woods of all kinds of dogs, and all of them have been waiting for this boy, THEIR boy. And he's calling all their names as they run to him; "Maggie! Snoopy! Mr. Hound!" And some of them weren't even his dogs, but ones he had loved in another time and place; "Smokey! Whiskers! Chootsie! Pepie!" Oh, it’s wonderful to see, this red haired boy and these dogs! They love him so much, and they've missed him for so long! And finally out walks a very pretty cat; she's small and quite ladylike, gray with black stripes, and very fluffy (especially her tail.) She's winds herself around the boys' feet as he walks. "Hello, Zsa Zsa!” he says. “It's so nice to see you here, too!" These animals, all the ones who've loved him, and who he's loved, are the first to greet him when he arrives. And they are his honor guard as they lead him home. That's my story for Jimmy, and I'm sticking to it.
