Obituary for Carol Ann Viering

Carol Ann Viering, 73, of Hollywood passed away peacefully on September 6th. Carol was born on March 30, 1943 in Hartford, CT, daughter of Concetta Rucci (a vibrant 100 year old) and the late Lawrence Rucci. She is survived by her husband of 55 years Winfield George Viering, daughters Elaine Dionne (Chris), Beth Grant (Bill), granddaughter Michelle Maness, step-granddaughters Brenna Grant and Eliza Grant, sisters Elena Cunningham (Chuck) and Donna Carroll (Charlie), brother in law Victor Viering (Barb), sister in law Judy Viering, and many nieces and nephews.
One of Carol’s greatest passions was teaching, which she practiced for thirty years in various locales: Union, South Carolina (20 years), Darlington, England (4 years), Bloomfield, Connecticut (2 years) and Florence, South Carolina (4 years). Carol’s compassion for her students and award winning teaching style inspired others to become educators, one being her granddaughter, Michelle. After retirement, she continued to embrace the teaching profession by donating countless volunteer hours to the Charleston area charity, Teachers’ Supply Closet. Until her passing, she served as a board member and as a tireless worker to provide for teacher and student needs.
Carol was diagnosed with ovarian cancer seven years ago. She fought a long, courageous battle with the unfailing and constant support of husband George, Dr. Kohler and all of the wonderful staff at MUSC. During treatment and remissions, she who adored travel was ready to explore faraway places with George. They visited fifty countries in the seven years after her diagnosis such as Antarctica, Australia, Myanmar, and Scotland.
A graveside service and internment will be held at the Dyer Cemetery, 15 Dyer Cemetery Road, Canton, Connecticut on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at 10:30 am.
In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to Charleston’s Teachers’ Supply Closet, www.teachersupplycloset.org.
