Obituary for Dorothy Checksfield (Swift)

Dorothy (Swift) Checksfield, 93, of Canton, CT lost her battle with Alzheimer’s disease on Wednesday, December 7, 2016. She was born December 16, 1922 in Syracuse, NY, daughter of the late Harry and Madeline L. Swift and grew up in Elbridge, New York. She lived her adult life in Syracuse, NY prior to moving to Canton, CT 30 years ago. Dorothy was the Office Manager of Francis Audio Visual in Syracuse for many years prior to her retirement.
From football, to her love of the Syracuse Orangemen, Dorothy was an avid sports fan. Her meticulous study of the sports section led her to predict the outcome of football and basketball tournament pools throughout her life, to the dismay of those competing with her. More than anything, Dorothy loved attending her grandchildren's activities when they were young. Rooting for their teams or listening to their concerts - she lived life vicariously through them, and reminisced about similarities to her own childhood. A devoted mother and grandmother, Dorothy’s loyalty to her family was endless and resolute.
Dorothy was predeceased by her loving father and mother and is survived by her son, Thomas H. Checksfield and his wife Barbara of Canton, her loving grandson, Chris Checksfield and his wife Lauren of Franklin, MA and her two great-grandsons, Henry and Ethan, and her adoring granddaughter Molly Checksfield of Washington, DC.
A private burial will be held in Syracuse, NY in the Spring where she will come to rest with her mother and father at Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Syracuse. Contributions, in lieu of flowers, can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Central New York Chapter, 441 W Kirkpatrick St, Syracuse, NY 13204.
