Obituary for Dorothy Devaney Swenson

Dorothy Devaney Swenson of Weatogue, CT died peacefully on Sunday, March 25, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on November 17, 1928, to James Joseph Devaney and Magdalen (Raichle) Devaney, in Valley Stream, New York. Her husband, W. Warren Swenson, pre-deceased her in 1983.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Todd and Sandy Swenson, of San Francisco, CA, and her daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Gary Kingsbury of Thomaston, CT and Kristi and Bruno Alcouffe of Bonnelles, France; her four beautiful grandchildren, Jessica Campbell (Wayne), Emily Gagnon (Justin), Etienne (Kae) and Olivier Alcouffe, and her dear great-granddaughters, Semira Campbell and Aesha Gagnon. Her brother, Richard J. Devaney of Long Island, NY, and her close friend and companion, Mark K. Buxton, of Manchester, CT predeceased her. She is also survived by loved nieces and nephews, Carol, Fred, Dennis, Jeanine, Susan and Scott and her sister-in-law, Jane Schatzlein.

Dorothy was a graduate of Hartford College for Women and Smith College. She was an active volunteer for most of her life, beginning in the 1940s as a member of the Jr. AWVS in Valley Stream. She was a Mentor through her First Church Affiliation, and an active member of the Simsbury Auxiliary of Child and Family Services. She loved playing bridge and spending time with friends.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday March 30 at 2:00pm at First Church of Christ, 689 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury, CT. Donations to the Simsbury Volunteer Ambulance or the Simsbury Library will be appreciated. The Vincent Funeral Home of Simsbury is assisting her family with arrangements.
