Obituary for Dorothy Ann Clark

Dorothy Ann Clark, who died on May 24, was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1929. She attended St. Hillary’s School then graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a master’s degree. Dorothy married Alastair Clark in 1955 and they settled in England. They had two daughters, Kathleen and Fiona. Dorothy devoted her early married years to raising their children and actively serving in church groups. In 1975 they relocated to Connecticut. She expanded her volunteering role serving with Literacy Volunteers of America (LVA) for 20 years, working up to program chairman then Connecticut Board of Directors President. Among other awards, Dorothy received the Hartford Courant Recognition Award in Education in 1984. After retiring from LVA, she volunteered with Gifts of Love and latterly with Friends of Canton Public Library. She was also a member of Canton Center Congregational Church. Dorothy was predeceased by husband Alastair, daughter Kathleen and her partner Bob Lucas, brother-in-law John and sister-in-law Marjory. Dorothy leaves behind a daughter Fiona and her husband David Friar of West Hartford and a sister Hazel in Scotland. Other surviving relatives include Justin, Shauna, Hayley and Zoe Friar of Southington, Christopher and Alison Friar of West Hartford, her nephews and their families, and Alison Eads of Maine. There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held on June 7, 2018, 11 a.m. at Canton Center Congregational Church, 184 Cherry Brook Road, Canton Center, CT. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation in her name to Gifts of Love (giftsoflovect.org) or a charity of your choice.
