Obituary for Catherine Mortenson

Catherine A. (Beltran) Mortenson passed away unexpectedly on Monday, January 21, 2019, following a lengthy struggle with Dementia. Catherine was born on July 24, 1923, in Brooklyn, New York and was one of nine children (five sisters and three brothers). Her large family was close-knit her entire life and were lovingly labeled the “kissing Beltrans”. Catherine loved music and especially loved to sing. Following her Catholic high school education, she was encouraged to be practical and secured a job as a secretary at RCA in Manhattan. There she would meet her first husband and mentor, Charles Carney, whose union would produce three children (Diana, Charles and Brian). Catherine was an extraordinary mother who supported her children with much love throughout her life. Although Catherine grew up as a city girl, she found her way to Connecticut and truly embraced country living. Following the passing of Charles, Catherine subsequently met a comical man named Arthur A. Mortenson by chance at a neighbor’s house. Soon thereafter, they married, traveled to Europe on their honeymoon and began the second phase of their lives, with the marriage lasting more than three decades. Catherine was a proud and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She loved entertaining, gardening, singing and crocheting, but was especially known for her culinary talent!
Catherine is survived by her older sister Anita Gil; her younger sister Josephine Galvin and her husband Joe; her three children, Diana Anderson and her husband Lyle, Charles Carney and his wife Natalie, Brian A. Carney and his wife Mary; her grandchildren Gabriel Tutak, Anthony Tassistro and Keeley Walcott; several great grandchildren and all of her extended Mortenson family.
A graveside service will be held for family and close friends on Friday, June 21, 2019 at 10:45 am at Saint Mary’s Cemetery on Cobble Road in Salisbury, CT 06039. Flowers may be sent to Vincent Funeral Home, 120 Albany Turnpike, PO Box 411, Canton CT 06019 prior to the burial (Thurs. 6/20).
