Obituary for Lisa Spoering

Lisa Jeanne (Turnbull) Spoering of Granby, CT, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 9, 2019. She was born on November 25, 1955 to Warren Turnbull and Roberta (Barclay) Turnbull in Syracuse, NY.
Lisa was raised in Brewerton, NY, graduated from Paul Smith’s College (‘75) and the University of Maine (‘77) with High Honors in Forestry, Outdoor Recreation and Park Management and worked for several years as a Ranger for the National Park Service. After raising her family, she worked for 22 years as a Special Education Tutor in the New Hartford Elementary Schools, which brought her much joy. She also nurtured her love of reading and of people by working part time at the Granby Public Library.
Lisa enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with her husband George on their hiking, camping, skiing, bicycling, kayaking, geocaching and travel adventures. Her joy for life was also reflected in her love for music, reading, art and painting.

Lisa was an active member of Saint Matthew Lutheran Church in Avon, CT where she was an officer and member of the Church Council, Chairperson for the Cookie Ministry, a member of the Fellowship Committee, Sunday Morning Lector Team, SMLC Evening Reader’s Book Club, and the Outreach Committee. Lisa was the President and Historian of the Shades of Northwest Hills Painting Club, a chapter of the Society of Decorative Painters; a member of the National Ski Patrol as a Mountain Host at Ski Sundown, and Co-President of the Tutors Union at New Hartford Elementary Schools.

Lisa is survived by her loving husband George Spoering, her children Timothy Cassell, Christina King (Joel), Benjamin Cassell, her husband’s children Erik Spoering (Barbara; grandson Dominik), and Karen Spoering. She is also survived by her sisters Laurie Hollis (Charles), Lynn Nares (Terry), brother Scott Turnbull (Ellen) and her cousin and friend Michelle VanEpps (Jim); her husband’s siblings, Richard Spoering (Susan), Diane Robertson (Thomas) and Carol Freel (Michael), and many nieces and nephews. Lisa was predeceased by her parents Warren and Roberta Turnbull.

Calling hours will be on Friday, September 13th from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 224 Lovely Street in Avon at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 14th. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Lisa’s memory may be made to St Matthew Lutheran Church, 224 Lovely St, Avon, CT 06001 or the National Cancer Association, 19 West 34th Street, New York, NY 10001.
