Obituary for Mary Helen McDermott

Our beloved aunt, Mary Helen McDermott “Mamie”, died October 23, 2019, in Simsbury at the age of 95. Mamie was born December 5, 1923, in New York City to Patrick and Martha (McNally) McDermott. Mamie graduated from Wadleigh High School in New York City in 1941. She worked in a factory during WWII and at LaSalle Music as an administrative assistant. A faithful daughter, she lovingly supported and cared for her parents as they aged.
After a 30-year career in payroll at Otis Elevator, Mamie happily retired in Newington, Connecticut. A second mom to many, Mamie is survived by 10 beloved nieces and nephews, 25 great nieces and nephews, and 14 great-great nieces and nephews.
Mamie was a devoted aunt to her large family. She could be counted on for support in times of need and to celebrate major milestones. She showed her love with delicious meatballs, ice-cream served in chilled glass bowls, and plentiful M&M’s at the ready for any visitor. Mamie never missed a birthday or anniversary and was always sure to slip her great-great nieces and nephews a little spending money when they visited. At different points in her life, she loved to cook, travel, play cards, play bingo, go to the movies, and help her friends at the senior center and assisted living facility.
Mamie was predeceased by an infant brother, James, two sisters, Patricia King and Teresa Hegarty, and her brothers-in-law, Edward J. King, Sr. and John F. Hegarty, Sr.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 AM on Saturday, November 2, at the Vincent Funeral Home on 880 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 AM at St. Catherine of Siena in West Simsbury, CT. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, if you wish, please make a donation to the Life Enrichment Department at McLean Health Center, 75 Great Pond Road, Simsbury CT 06070.
