Obituary for Lloyd A. Wheeler
Lloyd A. Wheeler, 91, of Simsbury passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 5, 2019 surrounded by family after a valiant battle with dementia. In addition to his wife of 63 years Julia(Sullivan)Wheeler he leaves behind his daughter Susan Kelleher(Kevin) of Farmington; his sons Matthew, Jonathan(Katherine)of Newtown; his five grandsons, Shaun(Becky), Scott, Matthew(Shawnna), Timothy and Michael; and his two great granddaughters Hyla Wheeler and Shea Kelleher.
Lloyd grew up in River Edge NJ. He attended Mount Herman, SMU and Paterson State Teachers College. He was a proud member of the US Marine Corps. He always wore a flag on his lapel to honor his country. He worked for Peterson Steels for many years, moving his family from Detroit to Chicago then back to his home state of NJ finally settling in his beloved Simsbury. He was known by many for his daily walks on Iron Horse Boulevard. He and Julia would walk from their condo in Heritage Glen, where he served as President of the Board, down to Drake Hill Mall where they ran a business together, Wheeler & Associates. While walking was a passion he really loved his cars, especially his Mini Cooper, often taking it for long rides on the beautiful back roads of Connecticut. The 13’ Runabout Speedboat he built with his children was a special source of pride. The family would often vacation on Klinger Lake in Sturgis MI, whipping that boat around the lake with a water skier in tow. Some of the best family memories were made there. In his younger days he could be found on the golf course. But in later years bowling was his game and Julia often joined him for League play. He was a jack of all trades always taking great pride in his homes keeping everything in working order and looking good. Lloyd certainly knew how to enjoy himself. He was known to break into dance, make up endearing, hysterical expressions and would always have a good verbal comeback. Lloyd will be remembered for his sharp wit, love of family and country.
