Obituary

Cynthia Ann Atwood Couch (Mimi)
October 21, 1931-February 25, 2020

Born in Watertown to Clifford and Cora Atwood, Cindy grew up in Watertown and at Bantam Lake with her older brother William and younger sister Polly. She married Norman (Bud) Couch on May 22, 1954 after several years of dating. The story goes that Bud won a round of golf with his and Cindy’s dads, and the prize was “a date with one of my daughters.” Cindy opened the door and the two spent more than 55 years together.
Mom attended Abbott Academy and graduated from Endicott College in 1951.

After they married, she and Bud settled in Birmingham, Michigan, where all three of their children were born. From 1963 to 1968 the family lived in Aachen, Germany, outside Pittsburg, and outside Indianapolis before the young couple settled in Simsbury where Cindy spent 52 years gathering a never-ending circle of friends and fans. Cindy and Bud joined West Avon Congregational Church in 1968 where they were active members of the community. They were both avid golfers, spending weekends at Hop Meadow Country Club with their pack of golfing buddies, and she was very involved in state golf tournaments.

Here’s what we remember. She lived a simple and intentional life: being there for anyone who needed her, seeing the cup not just half-full but overflowing, and believing in the goodness and generosity of everyone she met. She volunteered her time. She welcomed people into her circle. She paid attention to what people needed. She listened. And she always cared. While many of her own friends have passed, the ripple of her love and care have spread far beyond her own generation - to our own friends and the friends of our children.

Along with her kindness, we’ll remember her homemade Anadama Bread and English Muffins, her special Russian Tea, pots of spaghetti sauce on the stove, bountiful lunches in the ski lodge, and the thousands of meals that she prepared with love to nourish all of us, our families and our friends. We feel exceedingly blessed to have had her in our lives.

Cindy was predeceased by her loving husband Bud and brother William. She leaves her sister Polly Atwood Merriman; children: Cathryn Couch, Bill Couch, Sarah Leathers, daughter-in-law Deb Couch, and sons-in-law Jeff Black and Alan Leathers; grandchildren: Samantha Leathers Hayes (Ryan), Ethan Couch, Emily Couch Hoagland (Ian), Hadley Black (Kayla), Hannah Geiger (Jack), and Will Leathers (Kayla); great-grandchildren: Madison Geiger and Logan Hayes; and her dearly loved foreign-exchange daughter Maria Petersen and her children Linnea and Peter; and a countless number of others whose lives will forever be enriched.

The family will hold visiting hours on Saturday March 7 from 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM at Vincent’s Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Street, Simsbury, CT. A memorial service will be held to celebrate Cindy’s life at West Avon Congregational Church on Sunday, March 8, at 1:00 PM. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers or to honor her passion for nourishing others well, a contribution can be made to the non-profits that her daughters founded and that Cindy was very proud of; Healing Meals Community Project , P.O. Box 7223, Bloomfield, CT 06602 or Ceres Community Project , 7351 Bodega Ave., Sebastopol, CA 95472. For online condolences please visit www.vincentfuneralhome.com

I'm so very sorry I didn't know about Cindy's passing. I had retired in December but kept working per diem a few times a month. I loved your mom. We always said we had a special bond and we'd be friends "forever and ever". My heart is so sad. I wish I could have attended her services just to say good bye to her and her family. I'll always remember her fondly in my heart.

So sorry to hear of your loss, I have such wonder memories in high school of coming over to your house and being greeted with the wonderful smell of bread and a contagious smile and a warmth from Cindy and your family, it always felt like home. Im sure she will be missed greatly, just remember she will always be with you and she and Bud made a wonderful, caring family! Thanks for letting me be part of that family for a short time, it will always hold a special place in my heart.
