Susan Conlon Barnes, of Simsbury (formerly of Glastonbury and East Haddam, CT), passed away from ovarian cancer on June 1, 2020 at home surrounded by her family. Sue was raised in Bristol, CT before attending Trinity College, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where she earned a Master’s Degree. Sue was proud to become one of the first female engineers at Pratt and Whitney. She developed many friendships there during her over 30-year tenure. Her greatest joy in life was raising her son, Jordan. She enjoyed volunteering at the local library and schools; attending his concerts and sporting events; and making food, Halloween costumes, and anything else that she thought would make him happy. The world has lost a loving, smart, kind, fun, energetic woman. She was a genuine, loving, and caring person whose smile and presence would light up any room.

She leaves behind her husband, Dana, and her son, Jordan. She is predeceased by her mother, Norma (Coggins) Conlon, and her father, Edward Conlon. She is survived and will be missed by numerous family and friends.

A memorial service will be held in the fall. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation in Sue’s memory to the Friends of the East Haddam Free Public Library, 18 Plains Rd, Moodus, CT 06469. The Vincent Funeral Home of Simsbury is caring for the arrangements. Please visit Sue’s “Book of Memories” at for online tributes.

Dear Dana, Jordan and entire family,
My family and I are aching for you as you deal with the loss of your beloved, Sue. Though I only knew Sue through our neighborhood lunches, etc., I always loved talking with her and enjoying her friendly, smiling eyes. She was sweet and kind and I know how much she loved being your wife and Jordan's mom. I will miss her friendly wave as we came and went from the neighborhood and our conversations. Please call on us for any reason. With sympathy, Penelope & Kevin

This is a heartfelt message to Sue. Sue, we connected with each other as you worked with my husband Scott at Pratt and Whitney. I know we only talked on the phone a few times and texted back and forth. I just wanted to say I wished we exchanged pictures during that time because I know you!! I didn’t think I did but when I saw your picture I recognized you from Pratt picnics and possibly other events! Hi! It was nice to connect with you as we had both been dealt the blow of being diagnosed with ovarian cancer just a month apart. We talked about our similar treatments and how awful it was to lose our hair and our eyebrows! What a mess. You said you had a high tolerance for pain as was evidenced when you said the recovery from your surgery wasn’t that bad and mine was awful!! I did convince you to try the Emla cream even though you said you didn’t need it because the needles didn’t hurt too much. You are very brave and I told you so! After Covid hit we kind of lost track of each other for a while. I am so so sorry you are gone. I would like to talk some more!! I know you tried your best and fought hard against this disease. I only wish the doctors had more to offer. May you rest in peace knowing you are loved. Love to your family Dana and Jordan as well. –Chris Billings

I first met Sue in the late 1970’s when she started at Pratt & Whitney. We were in the same engineering group working on combustors. She was creative and eager to learn how to perform high temperature structural analyses. She contributed much to several new designs. She always looked forward to the annual trip to Boston to see the Red Sox play. She worked for several years for Marc Analysis Research Corporation as a Customer Support Engineer, after which she returned to Pratt & Whitney to continue work in the aerospace field. While we worked in different buildings I remember that she’d always have a smile and something nice to say when there was a chance meeting. I was saddened to hear about her passing. There are too few like her and she will be missed. May she rest in peace. – Jim Dierberger

Dear Dana and Jordan,
Lana and I were saddened to learn of the passing of Sue. We are very sorry for your loss. I first met Sue at Pratt & Whitney and she recruited me to play soccer on the Chimeras co-ed soccer team. She had a very infectious smile and was a pleasure to be around. May found memories of her help you get through this difficult time. With our deepest sympathy,
Lana and Larry Gray
