Obituary for Barbara Lowell

Barbara Elston Lowell

May 7, 1929 to January 17, 2021

Barbara was born and lived in Collinsville/Canton almost her entire life. She passed peacefully at River Ridge at Avon on Jim’s birthday. Barbara was preceded in death by her loving husband, James B. Lowell Jr. and her middle son Mark Lowell. Barbara is survived by three children, Sandy, James III, who lives in Colorado, Jennifer York-Barr who lives in Minnesota, and Jeffrey Lowell who lives in Massachusetts, along with 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Barbara was born to Clair and Irene Elston. Clair was the last president of the Collins Company. Barbara met her husband, Jim, while growing up in Canton and Collinsville. She graduated from Skidmore College, married Jim after college, and before Jim, who graduated from Dartmouth College, joined the Army to serve his country in Korea. Their first son, Sandy, was born while Jim was still in Korea.

Barbara was a business education teacher at Canton High School early on and finished her teaching career as a reading tutor at Canton Elementary School. She also served on the Collinsville Savings Society Board and the Canton Police Commission. Barbara and Jim were also very active in the Collinsville Congregational Church early on and then the Canton Center Congregational Church. The Collinsville Historical Museum was a passion for Barbara. The museum preserves a significant history of Collinsville as well as her family.

There will be a celebration of Barbara’s life this coming summer. Please email Barbara’s oldest son Sandy, [email protected] , if you would like to join the celebration this summer. The Vincent Funeral Home of Canton is caring for the arrangements. Please visit Barbara’s “Book of Memories” at www.vincentfuneralhome.com for online tributes.
