Obituary

Dorothy R. (Herman) McCartney, 92, of Simsbury, beloved wife of Clarence Edward McCartney, died Monday, March 15, 2021, surrounded by family at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford. She was born October 12, 1928 in Hanover Green, PA, daughter of the late John and Stella (Tryba) Herman and had lived in Broomall, PA prior to moving to Simsbury CT in 1976. In addition to raising her family, Dot was a Nurse’s Aide. She enjoyed bingo, shopping, bowling, traveling, TV game shows, Rummikub and most of all spending time with family. After her children became self-sufficient, she continued her endeavors to enrich the lives of others including caring for both of her parents, extended family, friends and clients. She always had a positive view of life and always focused on the positive traits of the people who surrounded her. Nobody ever left her house hungry.

In addition to her loving husband of 69 years, she is survived by her brother Ray Herman and wife Patty of Voorhees NJ, her sons, Dave McCartney and wife Shung Ming of Denton TX, Mark McCartney of York PA, Paul McCartney and wife Linda of Canton CT, Bob McCartney and fiancée Kristin Dowler of Winchester CT, and Ken McCartney and wife Tracey of Granby CT; her grandchildren, Kim, Matt, Danielle, Jason, Holly, Kelly, Kristy, Katie and Jack and her great grandchildren, Julia, Lily, Kyle and Miles. She was predeceased by her brother, John (Jan) Herman Jr.

Services will be private. Donations in Dot’s memory may be made to The Greatest Generations Foundation, 501 South Cherry Street, 11th floor, Suite 201, Denver, CO 80246 or at https://www.tggf.org/

Having Dot McCartney as my second mom was one of the greatest blessings of my life. She was an absolutely amazing person (and these words don't do her justice). Her ability to build up the people around her, see if they had need, help whenever and however it was needed and be a dependable and stabilizing force in the lives of her family and this world is an example I will carry with me forever. How lucky our children were to call her grandmom. How lucky we all were to have her as a part of our lives! She was selfless and that is rare. She was kind and compassionate but also strong and resilient. Her decency, work ethic and love for her family lives on through her wonderful husband and amazing sons. I simply don't have adequate words to sing her praises. Words are not enough.
