Obituary

Dorothy May Corey (nee Sweetman) passed away peacefully at UConn Health Center on Saturday, May 22, 2021.  Dot was 93.  She was born in Paterson, NJ, the oldest daughter of Leonard Sweetman and Dora (nee Taylor).  She is survived by her sisters Dolores Muhlback and Joyce Hook, her daughter Tracy Reed (David), and her son Leonard Corey (Constance).  She was a loving grandma to Tracy’s children, Michael and Abigail, and Len’s children, Ian and Owen.  Dot was predeceased by her husband Leonard, her brother Jim and sister Irene Young.

Dot was kind, loving, gentle, patient, understanding and forgiving, and she loved her family and her God above all things.  A woman of deep faith, she was raised in the First Baptist Church in Paterson, NJ by a devout mom and dad.  During her final seven years in Reading, MA she was a regular on Sundays and special occasions at the First Congregational Church of Reading.  She loved to sing the old hymns.  She loved to sing, period.  She loved the crooners.  Perry Como was her favorite.  Dot had a beautiful voice, singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow at her 90th birthday party with a passion that belied her years.  She also loved food, especially food cooked for her by her loving daughter-in-law, Connie.  Dot had a particular love of ice cream.  Dot’s ashes will be laid to rest alongside her husband, Leonard, in a private ceremony in Glen Spey, NY.  She rests now with the saints.

Donations may be made in Dot’s memory to the First Congregational Church of Reading, 25 Woburn Street, Reading, MA 01867 or Mystic Valley Elder Services, 300 Commercial St., #19, Malden, MA 02148.
