Obituary for Timothy Smith

Timothy Knowlton Smith, 73, of West Hartland, Connecticut, died at Avon Health Center with his loving wife and children by his side on Wednesday (June 2, 2021). Timothy was the devoted husband of 44 years to Linda Mona Smith, loving father to Corey Mona Smith and wife Katherine of Freeport, ME, Charity Newton Smith of Avon, CT, Casey Knowlton Smith and wife Julia of Torrington, CT, and Christopher Clark Smith and wife Rachel of Helena, MT, and proud grandfather to Madeline, Ian, and Ernest.

Timothy was raised in Farmington, CT, and attended Kingswood Oxford school where he excelled in academics and athletics. After graduation, Timothy was injured in an automobile accident and suffered a traumatic brain injury that delayed his college matriculation. Through hard work and resilience, after one year of rehabilitation, Timothy attended Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH, where he studied and played lacrosse for four years. After his graduation in 1972, he moved to Hartland, CT where he bought a house and small farm, met and married Linda, and began his family of four children.

Timothy worked in a supervisory role at Hartford Special Machinery Company, a firm founded by his grandfather, for several years before the company’s closing in the early 1980s. Afterwards, he started a construction company focused on preserving older residences. Timothy worked in various construction roles until his retirement.

Timothy enjoyed the outdoors, raising farm animals, spending time with family, and caring for his nearby parents. He enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, like a cool swim in neighboring Hartland Pond, watching a passing thunderstorm, a rare black squirrel sighting, or deer grazing in the pasture.

At the age of 65, Timothy was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Parkinson’s Disease, which slowly stripped him of his independence in the years that followed. Despite this, he was able to enjoy his life at home until four weeks prior to his passing.
