Obituary for Patricia Scanlon

Patricia McDavitt Scanlon died on June 22, 2021 in Simsbury. She grew up in Norwood, MA, alongside her cousins Ted, Tim, and Pete. After graduating from Norwood Senior High School, she graduated from Regis College in Weston, MA, with a degree in home economics. Pat met her future husband, the late law professor Cornelius Scanlon, while working as a photographer for the Boston Record American.

Patricia believed in the importance of performing one’s civic duty and was awarded for such by the State of Connecticut. She was an active member of several Simsbury town boards, such as the Park and Rec Commission, and was a 4-H Club leader. She enjoyed substitute teaching at Simsbury High and enjoyed traveling extensively, both in this country and abroad. She was always happy to work in her gardens and belonged to the Gardeners of Simsbury.

Patricia passed her love of gardening, reading, and animals to her six children: Lt. Commander Gail Zeisser (ret’d) and her husband Norman; Charles Scanlon; the Honorable Patricia (Penny) Scanlon and her husband Fritz; Connie and Larry Ettelson; Neil and Mary Scanlon; and Steve and Helen Scanlon. The immediate family would not be complete without acknowledging her much-loved West Highland Terrier, Davitt.

Patricia also leaves her beloved grandchildren: Christopher and Michael; Anielka, Tamara, CJ, Adriana, and Inti; as well as Cody-Ann and Cassidy. She also has five great grandchildren.

Patricia wishes to remember her best friends, Jeannette and George Van Wormer and Shirley (deceased) and Bruce Metzger who were dear to her for decades. She would also like to thank Dennis Hannon and A.J. Zukowski for their consistent willingness to help her whenever she called upon them. And, finally, endless thanks from the whole family to her aide and “daughter in heart,” Elizabeth Madden, who made it possible for Pat to live independently and joyfully for so long.

Vincent’s Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. However, there will be a private reception at an appropriate time. The family requests that any donations be made to the Simsbury Public Library in Pat’s name.
