James A. Mahan, 91, of Simsbury, husband of the late Betty (Ritz) Mahan, died Friday, July 2, 2021 at his home surrounded by his family. His family is indebted to the caregivers from Home Helpers and Amy’s Angels who took amazing care of him. He was born October 17, 1929 in Toledo, OH, son of the late Joseph R. and Lucy (Inge) Mahan and had lived in Northbrook, IL prior to moving to Simsbury 52 years ago. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Jim was a graduate of Lehigh University, Class of 1952 having received his Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Mr. Mahan Owned and Operated Malcolm Black Associates for many years prior to his retirement. He was a member of the William Inge Festival Foundation. Jim enjoyed spending time in nature, hiking, hunting, canoeing and sailing, always with a dog by his side. Most of all, he loved to spend time with family at his summer home in Brewster, MA.
Jim is survived by his loving partner of 16 years, Francis Card, step brother Clark Steinman and wife Alice of Palos Verdes Estates, CA and his children, Saralee Dornfeld and husband Daniel of Unionville, James R. Mahan of Plainville, Kathryn Dornfeld and husband David of Killingworth, Sandra Mahan of Chester, and Kevin Mahan and wife Janine of Cheshire; ten adoring grandchildren; Daniel, Matt, Lucy, Mary, Eric, Will, Ben, Andrew, Kaeleigh and Ryan as well as 6 great grandchildren; Breena, Theodore, Wesley, Amelia, Samuel and Jonathon. He was predeceased by daughter-in-law, Vincenza Mahan, his sister, Joann Kirchmaier and his stepmother, Sally Steinman.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at the Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury at 4:00 PM on Friday, July 9th. Visitation will be held prior to the service, starting at 2:00 PM. Private burial will be in Simsbury Cemetery.
