James A. Mahan, 91, of Simsbury, husband of the late Betty (Ritz) Mahan, died Friday, July 2, 2021 at his home surrounded by his family. His family is indebted to the caregivers from Home Helpers and Amy’s Angels who took amazing care of him. He was born October 17, 1929 in Toledo, OH, son of the late Joseph R. and Lucy (Inge) Mahan and had lived in Northbrook, IL prior to moving to Simsbury 52 years ago. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Jim was a graduate of Lehigh University, Class of 1952 having received his Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Mr. Mahan Owned and Operated Malcolm Black Associates for many years prior to his retirement. He was a member of the William Inge Festival Foundation. Jim enjoyed spending time in nature, hiking, hunting, canoeing and sailing, always with a dog by his side. Most of all, he loved to spend time with family at his summer home in Brewster, MA.

Jim is survived by his loving partner of 16 years, Francis Card, step brother Clark Steinman and wife Alice of Palos Verdes Estates, CA and his children, Saralee Dornfeld and husband Daniel of Unionville, James R. Mahan of Plainville, Kathryn Dornfeld and husband David of Killingworth, Sandra Mahan of Chester, and Kevin Mahan and wife Janine of Cheshire; ten adoring grandchildren; Daniel, Matt, Lucy, Mary, Eric, Will, Ben, Andrew, Kaeleigh and Ryan as well as 6 great grandchildren; Breena, Theodore, Wesley, Amelia, Samuel and Jonathon. He was predeceased by daughter-in-law, Vincenza Mahan, his sister, Joann Kirchmaier and his stepmother, Sally Steinman.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at the Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury at 4:00 PM on Friday, July 9th. Visitation will be held prior to the service, starting at 2:00 PM. Private burial will be in Simsbury Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to McLean, 75 Great Pond Road, Simsbury, CT 06070 or to the National Park Foundation, 1500 K Street NW, Suite 700, Washington, DC 20005. With deep sorrow we share our condolences with the entire Mahan family. We have been extremely fortunate to call him a friend and neighbor and remain so grateful that he brought all of the great and kind Mahan family into our Cape Cod world. Our condolences to Jim’s family and to Fran. We used to love to talk to Jim in our adjoining yard. He had great stories to tell about the neighborhood and our bear visitors. We will miss his great smile. The Lynch and Lukowicz families will never forget him.
