Obituary for Joseph Girgenti

Joseph J. Girgenti, a long time resident of Tariffville, Connecticut, died on August 13, 2021.

Joe was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts on September 22, 1938 in the midst of a hurricane. He was the only child of Joseph and Mary (Ricci) Girgenti. Upon graduation from Lawrence High School in 1955, he joined the USAF in the Strategic Air Command. Following his discharge in 1958 he worked in aerospace and electronics while attending Lowell Technological Institute, now the University of Massachusetts. He later received his BA from Charter Oak College.

Joe was a lifelong learner, avid reader, amateur photographer, and lover of music, art, and history. In more recent years, he enjoyed traveling across Europe and the United States with his wife and family. He retired from the Connecticut Department of Emergency Management and continued taking classes through the Adult Learning Program. Joe was a longtime volunteer cameraman for Simsbury Community Television and volunteered at the House of Bread. He also served on the Board and as president of Simsbury UNICO.

He is survived by his wife, Mary-Margaret and his three sons and their spouses: Michael, and his wife Jackie of Kent, England; John and his husband Tommy of Washington, D.C. and Colin and his wife Julie of London, England. He is also survived by his daughter, Louise and her husband, Paul Mueller of Nashua, New Hampshire. Additionally, he has two grandsons, Benedict and Zachary of Kent, England.

The family wishes to express its gratitude for the care Joe received at the Smilow Cancer Center at Saint Francis Hospital and from McLean Homecare.

There will be calling hours from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Thursday, August 19th, at Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St Patrick-St Anthony Church, 285 Church Street in Hartford, on Friday, August 20th at 10:00 AM.
