Obituary for Alice Lorraine Daley (Stokes)

Alice Lorraine (Stokes) Daley, 91, of Simsbury, wife of the late James A. Daley, died Saturday , September 24, 2022 at Duncaster in Bloomfield. She was born December 22, 1930 in Cambridge, MA, daughter of the late Joseph and Alice E. (Murphy) Stokes and had lived in Chatham, NJ prior to moving to Simsbury 54 years ago. She was a Registered Real Estate Agent, was a Partner in an interior decorating firm and started and ran a catering business, all in the Farmington Valley. Alice was a member of the Avon Newcomers Club, Avon Garden Club, the United Way of Hartford, Overlook Hospital Healing Arts and Messenger Program, and founded the Chatham Township Welcome Wagon. She was a member of the First Church of Christ Simsbury, CT as well as the Chatham Methodist Church, found both church’s Annual Bazaars. She was awarded New Jersey Woman of the Year (1966) for creating volunteer programs at Overlook and other civic organizations in Chatham, NJ.

Central to her life was her pursuit of the arts in multiple mediums, especially painting in acrylics and watercolor, flower arranging, interior and exterior design, rug hooking and various arts and crafts. She was also a Patron of the MIT Science & Technology Program for Teachers. During her 44-year marriage to Jim, Alice and he travelled the world from the US to Europe to Asia, with an extended stay in China. They were also were cruise enthusiasts with many global ports-of-call in their 12+ trips. When not travelling, she enjoyed her summers on Cape Cod from childhood until just recently.
She is survived by her children, Mark Daley and wife Lisa of Canton, CT, Joseph Daley and husband Joseph Sarret of San Francisco, CA and Elizabeth Wilson of Sedona, AZ; daughter-in-law, Rosemary Daley of Simsbury, CT; her grandchildren Coleman Daley of Canton, CT, Dr. Abigail Gurall of Simsbury, CT, James J. Daley III of Richmond, VA, Jacqueline Petrovic of Vienna, Austria, Christopher Wilson of Santa Barbara, CA, Timothy Wilson of Salt Lake City, UT and Katherine Wilson of California; her great grandchildren Jack, Henry and William Gurall and Luka Petrovic. She was predeceased by a son James J. Daley II; a daughter Lorraine “Lori” Daley; her sister Eleanor Poirier and her brothers, Joseph Stokes and John Stokes.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, October 7th from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, October 8th at the First Church of Christ, 689 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury. Burial will follow in Simsbury Cemetery.
