Obituary for Arthur Sigmund

On December 18, 2022, Arthur Sigmund passed away at the age of 90. This tribute was expressed by Arthur himself. Practical, prepared, thoughtful, and generous, we would expect nothing less.

Arthur began his education at DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx, New York which he considered the finest HS in New York City. Subsequently, he was admitted to Brooklyn College during the turbulent 1950s where he studied Music Education and Orchestral Music. His first appointment was to JHS240K as a band teacher. He continued his musical studies publicly and privately and became a freelance musician. His career was interrupted by being drafted to the army where he became a member of the 6th armored division band. After discharge, he entered Queens College to continue his studies and where he met his late wife Clara Fein Sigmund. Both continued their careers as professional musical artists. Arthur played in Jazz & Swing bands and for a variety of events. He was then appointed as band director at Canarsie HS in Brooklyn, New York, where he was one of the first to organize a marching band for HS Football games. In 1970 he was appointed as Assistant Principal at IS390K and became the acting Principal until his retirement.

Arthur is survived by his two Children-Son Curt (Rita) Sigmund and Daughter Stacey (John) Fitch, four grandchildren Eric, Aaron, Allison, and Ryan, three Great Grand Children, his Sister Ann Sigmund Cahn and niece Cori (Mike) Fu and their children.
Arthur spent the majority of his retirement traveling the world, winters in Hawaii, visiting his extended family whom he loved madly, and continuing his passion for Music and Art.

Arthur did not want a formal funeral service, instead we will celebrate his wonderful life in the summer, his favorite time of year and in New York City, his favorite place on earth.

Thank you to the thoughtful and caring staff of The Residence of Brookside and Constellation Hospice for their support during this time.

In lieu of flowers, you may honor Arthur's memory by supporting a Music and Art program in your local schools. The Warner Theatre in Torrington CT (warnertheatre.org) or PacificWhale.org. Please visit Arthur’s Book of Memories at www.vincentfuneralhome.com for online tributes.
