Obituary for Margaret Palmer Colavecchio (Palmer)

Margaret Palmer Colavecchio, 84, of Canton, wife of the late Louis J. Colavecchio, died Tuesday, January 17, 2023 at River Ridge of Avon. She was born October 30, 1938 in Westfield, MA, daughter of the late Wilson and Elizabeth (Slye) Palmer and had lived in Granby prior to moving to Canton over 60 years ago.

Margaret was the children’s librarian aide at the Canton Public Library for many years as well as an aide in local schools. Margaret worked at Simsbury Bank and Trust, Progress Software in Avon, and as a legal assistant in Canton.

Music and the arts were Margaret’s second love behind her family. She was a member of the First Church Congregational Church of Canton Center for over 50 years. Margaret enjoyed being active in church activities and singing in the choir. Margaret was a recipient of the Nutmeg Symphony Orchestra Person of the Year award in 2013 while serving on the Board of Directors from 2006 to 2010. Margaret was also involved in fostering music history as a member of the Canton Historical Society. Margaret was an active member of the Canton Creative Arts Council helping to bring concerts and well-known artists to Canton. Margaret sang for the Waterbury Chorale where she was able to travel and sing touring in Brazil, Russia, Hungary, and Poland. Margaret also did the makeup for Collinsville Arts Theater in the early 1980’s. One of Margaret’s favorite memories was dressing up as Mother Goose to read to young children in Canton and surrounding towns. Margaret was a Girl Scout leader and Cub Scout den mother for her children. Margaret was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Margaret loved to travel and enjoyed seeing plays and musicals at the Bushnell in Hartford. One of her favorites was the Nutcracker. Margaret and her daughter enjoyed going to NYC to see Cats and West Side Story on Broadway. Margaret loved her grandchildren dearly and they were the focus of her life in later years.

She is survived by her brother Larry Palmer of San Diego CA; son Daniel Colavecchio and wife Catherine of Colchester; daughter Karen Bisset and husband Jonathan of Avon; grandchildren Patrick and Daniel Colavecchio and Holly and Emily Bisset; sister-in-law Donna Palmer; cousin Linda Labell and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank River Ridge of Avon and all the caregivers for their kindness and help throughout her stay.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, January 27th from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Vincent Funeral Home, 120 Albany Turnpike in Canton with a Memorial Service being celebrated at 11:00 AM.
