Obituary for Henrietta Schraner

Henrietta K. Schraner, a lifelong resident of Madison, passed away on June 12, 2023, at the Cherry Brook Health Center in Canton. Herkie was born on November 10, 1925, in the house that would be her lifelong home, and was the devoted daughter of the late Rudolph and Olive Schraner. Herkie graduated from Hand High school, and the Hart School of Music. After graduating from Hart, she was a trumpet player with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra. However, for most of her professional life, she worked as a dental secretary for Dr. Eugene and Dr. Peter Clifford of Hartford.

Herkie’s true passions were taking care of her family and serving her church. She was the devoted caretaker of her parents in their later years. Her niece and nephew rarely had a babysitter that was not their favorite aunt. For most of her life, until she became unable to hold them, Sunday dinners were always held at her house, affectionately known as the “corner.” At the North Madison Congregational Church, where she was a lifelong member, she was a constant presence and volunteer. Organizing, cooking, and serving at hundreds of church suppers were her specialty. She also served for countless years as the church secretary. And, on Sundays, she could always be found in the last pew, in the corner. Herkie was also a proud member of the Jordan Freeman Chapter of the D.A.R.

Herkie was predeceased by her sister, Laura Sunblade. She is survived by her brother-in-law, Bill Sunblade; her niece, Judy Sunblade and her nephew Jeff Sunblade and his wife Pat; and many dear and old friends. The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation and gratitude to the Cherry Brook Health Center and the McLean Hospice for their loving and committed care of Herkie.

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, June 24, at 1:00 PM at the North Madison Congregational Church. Burial will follow at the West Side Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the NMCC.
Vincent’s Funeral Home in Simsbury is caring for the arrangements.
