Obituary for Carla Aline Wilde

Carla Aline Wilde, age 88, died peacefully in her sleep on June 3, 2023, at Meadowbrook of Granby, in Granby, CT, where she had lived due to non-Alzheimer’s dementia. Carla was the elder daughter of Otto Alfred Strassenmeyer and his wife Aline (Cruchten) Strassenmeyer. Carla is survived by her husband Richard C. (Dick) Wilde and younger son Philip Wilde, grandson and granddaughter Colin and Lauren Wilde, all of Simsbury, CT, plus her younger sister Linda Stein of Barkhamsted, CT, and her niece, Melissa Powell, of Londonderry, NH. She was predeceased by her son, Rick Wilde, and her daughter-in law, Yolanda Wilde.

Carla was born in New Haven, CT, and educated in its public schools through junior high school, followed by high school at the Gateway School for Girls. Carla graduated from Connecticut College for Women (now Connecticut College) with a B.A. in German, followed by an M.A. in education from Yale University.

She married Dick in 1958 after a courtship that began and was fueled by a mutual love of classical music. She was a loving soulmate and staunch teammate who took over running their home and raising sons, Rick and Phil, while Dick commuted to Houston to work on NASA’s moon programs. She was a superb cook and meal planner who taught their sons the art of gourmet cooking and hosted many memorable dinner parties with family and friends.

Carla translated scientific articles from German into English. She was a kind and helpful neighbor and friend to many. She served Child and Family Services in several capacities and was a wonderful support to Linda and her children, who dearly loved their aunt.

Carla loved the water and taught generations of children to swim at their lakeside summer home. She and Dick shared their time generously with family and friends, creating a lifetime of happy memories.

In later years Carla and Dick traveled the world with the Yale Alumni Chorus. She continued to enjoy family events.

Dick is grateful that his cherished, loyal, and able wife Carla is free of her dementia and is now “resting quietly” (her words). Her Memorial Service will include interment of her ashes in the Memorial Garden at First Church followed by a light lunch in the church’s Palmer Hall (time and date are currently TBD). Memorial gifts may be made to The First Church of Christ, 689 Hopmeadow St., Simsbury, CT 06070 or to a charity of your choosing.
