Obituary for Richard A. Casavant

On Thursday, October 26, he played his final round of golf with his daughter, son-in-law, and son at Hopmeadow Country Club. He scored his last birdie sinking a ninety foot putt on the sixth hole.

Richard A. Casavant, 78, of Simsbury, beloved husband of Colleen (O’Donnell) Casavant, died Sunday, November 5, 2023 at his home. He was born September 8, 1945 in Hartford, son of the late Richard Wilfred and Johanna (McPhee) Casavant and grew up with his brother and sister on Waterside Lane in West Hartford and had lived in Simsbury since 1972. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and had attended the University of Hartford. Mr. Casavant was a Golf Professional and lifetime member of the PGA. He was the original pro at Simsbury Farms from its opening day in 1972 to the end of the 1997 season. In addition to golf, Richard enjoyed soccer, skiing, swimming and hockey, (in his younger days,) and exercising at The Y to maintain his beach body for his yearly excursion to The Bahamas. He was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church in West Simsbury.

He met his wife in January 1967 while stationed at Strategic Air Command in Omaha, Nebraska and they married at the end of that year. He was preceded in death by his sister, DonnaLee Eisley and her husband Richard Eisley. In addition to his loving wife of just short of 56 years, he is survived by his son, Michael Casavant and wife Erin Andrus of Bloomfield, CT, daughter Donna Marie and husband Tony Christensen of Windsor, CT, and grandchildren Nina Marie Christensen of Windsor, and Leaf Kuzmeskus and Bruin Kuzmeskus, both of Bloomfield, CT, his brother Douglas Casavant and wife Barbara of Granby, CT, several cousins, brothers and sisters-in-law of Omaha, NE and St. Paul, MN, and nephews and nieces scattered from coast to coast.

Following his final 18 holes, they went and grabbed a pizza and brought it home where the five of them played some dominoes. Richard said it was one of the most fun days of his life.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, November 16th from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 265 Stratton Brook Road in West Simsbury at 10:00 AM on Friday, November 17th. Burial with military honors will follow in Fairview Cemetery in West Hartford.
