Obituary for Christopher Winsor

Christopher Winsor of North Canton, Connecticut, died on November 8, 2023 at the age of 92. He leaves Helen, his wife of 66 years, their children Jeffrey (Elizabeth Corkum Winsor), Christopher (Catherine Freud Winsor), Deborah (Lauren Tellier), and grandchildren David, Katherine, Madeleine, Cole, and Derek. He loved them and will miss them. Chris is survived by his younger sisters Jessie W. Tramutolo and Mary (Polly) Winsor and was predeceased by his older brothers Paul III and Malcolm.

Chris was born March 22, 1931, the son of Paul Jr. and Marion Joyce Winsor. He grew up in Towaco NJ, Rowayton, CT, and Cohasset MA, and graduated from Rhode Island School of Design in 1954. For 20 years he worked as a registered architect with leading firms in Hartford, contributing to projects such as Constitution Plaza and the Wadsworth Atheneum.

His professional expertise was specifications and building codes; he served on both the Hartford and Connecticut State Building Code Revision Committees, as well as, the Town of Canton Code Adoption Committee. He was a charter member and past president of the Construction Specifications Institute, Hartford Chapter. He also served on committees of the American Society of Testing Material. His later career was with CIGNA as a Vice President heading up the Real Estate Investment Engineering unit, retiring in 1988.

Chris firmly believed in the importance of giving back to his country and the community. In college he enlisted with the Air National Guard, and in 1954 joined the Connecticut Air National Guard. Chris was selected to be the first commander of the 103rd Civil Engineering Flight group and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1984. He was a member of the National Ski Patrol for 28 years at Ski Sundown, a 10-year member of the North Canton Volunteer Fire Department, and for 34 years a member and longtime Chair of the Canton Zoning Commission.

None of Chris professional achievements and community activities would have been possible without the support and encouragement of his family. Chris and Helen married in 1957, and subsequently purchased the woods and pastureland in North Canton where he designed and built the contemporary house that has been their home ever since. Chris thoroughly enjoyed the brush clearing and trail work and in later years they donated those woods and trails to the Canton Land Trust, now known as Winsor Woods. In his retirement years, Chris was able to split his time between North Canton and his house in Wellfleet (Cape Cod), a town where as a child his family spent many summers.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Abigail’s restaurant in Simsbury, CT on Monday, December 4, from 1 to 4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers remembrance donations can be made to the Canton Public Library, 40 Dyer Avenue Canton, CT 06019 or to the Canton Land Conservation Trust, P.O. Box 41, Canton Center, CT 06020. Please visit his “Book of Memories” at www.vincentfuneralhome.com for online tributes.
