Obituary for Melinda Cora Lazor

Melinda J. Lazor, 79, of Simsbury, CT, wife of the late Stephan Peter Lazor, died Sunday, November 19, 2023 at her home. She was born May 10, 1944 in Marion County, IN, daughter of the late Maxwell Allis and Sarah Elizabeth (Burks) Johnson. Melinda was raised in Tulsa, OK and lived in Simsbury for the last 35 years. She attended Beloit College in Beloit, WI, where she met her late husband. She received her undergraduate degree from UConn and then went on to earn a Masters Degree in English from Trinity College. Melinda had a lifelong love of learning taking classes at the University of Hartford in English, art, history, and music up until her passing. She also enjoyed gardening and reading as well as creative and spiritual writing, with works published in the Upper Room.

Melinda was a pioneering career executive and enjoyed a 36-year career in the Insurance industry working for Aetna and The Hartford. In her younger years, she was also an avid horseback rider, competing in cross country and dressage events. She also loved to travel to visit friends and family or for the sheer enjoyment of it. Melinda had traveled all over the US, to England and Scotland, and many places in the Caribbean. Jamaica and Ambergris Caye, Belize both held very, special places in her heart.

Melinda was an active and dedicated Member of the Simsbury United Methodist Church. Through the church she became both a Stephen’s Minister and Friendly Visitor as well as devoting time to the Susanna Circle, Women’s Bible Study and various charities and outreach. Melinda had a life long passion for classical music, played the flute and was a member of the Farmington Valley Choral and Intonations chorus group.

She is survived by her children, Melinda Grunert and husband Paul of Enfield, CT, Amy Rintoul of Otis, MA and Peter Lazor and wife Rebecca of Ambler, PA; her sisters Sara Hein of Milwaukee, WI, and Hannah Meredith of Lake Oswego, OR, her grandchildren, Seth and Taylore Grunert, Stefan Rintoul and Graysen, Nash, and Wyatt Lazor. She was predeceased by two grandsons, Zachary Joseph Grunert and Calum James Rintoul.

A memorial service will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 16, 2023 at the Simsbury United Methodist Church, 799 Hopmeadow St. in Simsbury. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Simsbury United Methodist Church, Melinda Lazor Fund with contributions dedicated to the gardens and music programs.
