Obituary for Jay P. Halverstadt

Jay P. Halverstadt
Jay P. Halverstadt, 92, of Simsbury, beloved husband of the late Gerry Halverstadt, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home on April 10, 2016.

Jay was born in Salem, Ohio to the late Merle and Florence Halverstadt. He graduated from Albany High School in Albany, Georgia in 1942 and then joined the Navy to proudly serve his country during WWII. His first duty was aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Langley assisting in navigation. He continued his duties aboard the USS Sandoval, reaching the rank of Quartermaster First Class.

After the war he attended Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and joined the Lamda Chi Alpha fraternity. During college he worked for HigBee’s Department store where he met his wife Gerry.

Graduating in 1949 with a Business Administration Degree, he went to work in Sales for Remington Rand. He was transferred to Toledo, Ohio in 1959 where he lived until 1965. While there, he was an active member of his church and also supported the Toledo Zoo as a “Zoo Loo” helping to raise funds.

He was transferred to Philadelphia, and worked there until 1969 when Remington Rand moved him to Hartford, CT. In 1975 he and some partners bought the local branch of Remington Rand, and created Remco Office Machines, located in Windsor, CT.

Jay and his wife Gerry were founding members of the Simsbury Encore Club, and were active in the First Church of Christ. He was an avid bridge and tennis player and enjoyed reading, watching sports, traveling, and getting together with their close friends to create delicious gourmet meals.

Jay is survived by his two children, Kim Malley and her husband Dave of Bolton, and Mark Halverstadt and his wife Gwen of Simsbury; 3 grandchildren, Ryan Halverstadt, Erin Fable and Ross Halverstadt, numerous nieces and nephews, his good friend Alice Daley, and a brother Don Huston of Salem, Ohio. He was predeceased by his brothers, Nevin, Harry, Eldon and Glen.
A memorial service in celebration of Jay’s life will be held on Saturday, April 16 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Church of Christ on 689 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury.
