Obituary for Robert Fetherston

Robert Fetherston
Robert Henry George Fetherston of Farmington passed away on August 13, 2016 with his loving family at his side. Throughout his illness, his wife, Elizabeth Grey Fetherston, was always there for him with steadfast love and care. He was born September 18, 1932 in Long Island City, New York, to the late John Cornelius and Anna (Esker) Fetherston. Bob graduated from Xavier High School in New York City and then Fordham University, working up to 40 hours a week on various jobs on the side to help pay for his schooling, a fact in which he often reminded his children. He served in the Army, achieving the rank of Captain. He took a summer job at Connecticut General Life Insurance Company while trying to decide between attending Columbia Law School or Flight School, 37 years later he retired from Cigna after a career in which he worked his way up to Vice President of Underwriting and Sales. He ended his career as Vice President of Sales in Baltimore, Maryland. Bob met his wife Marie (Foto) at Connecticut General and were married in 1958. Connecticut General/Cigna was more than a place of employment for Bob and Marie, it truly was a family. They met many lifelong friends during his time at Connecticut General. Bob and his family lived in Wethersfield for 29 years. He was very involved in Corpus Christi Church where he served as a lector and ran the CYO High School program for many years. He also served on various town Board committees in Wethersfield and Farmington. He loved playing with his weekly tennis group and thoroughly enjoyed gardening and puttering around the house taking care of the endless jobs that every house requires. Bob loved attending his children’s sporting events and spending time with them on the family’s summer vacation adventures. Nothing was more important to Bob than his family. After losing his wife of 32 years, Bob moved back to Connecticut where he met Beth Grey. In 1992, Bob and Beth married and they thoroughly enjoyed traveling the world together. He will be dearly missed by his children Maribeth and (Jeff) Mortillaro of Simsbury, Connecticut, Brian and (Valarie) Fetherston of Atlanta, Georgia, Brenda Fetherston Hall of Alpharetta, Georgia, and Paul Fetherston of Asheville, North Carolina; his step-children, Elizabeth Grey, M.D. and Martin Asis, M.D. of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Melissa Grey of Ithaca, New York, Robert and Tomoni Grey of Nagano, Japan, Jerry and Tara Grey Ventura of Wellesley Hills, Massachusetts, Eric and Erica Grey of Boston, Massachusetts, and Jesse Alva and Kevin Grey of Bellevue, Washington; his sister Alice Claus of Flushing, New York, and his brother Richard Fetherston of Holbrook, New York; his grandchildren Adam, EmmaKate, Alexander, Madison, and Isabel Mortillaro, Dylan and Marie Fetherston, Madelaine Jakes, Jenna Marie and Carter Hall, Ethan and Romer Asis, Emily and Matthew Jones, Anri, Sara, Noah and Andrew Grey, Nicholas, Katherine, and William Ventura, Maxwell Grey, and Isaac and Benjamin Grey. He was predeceased by his first wife, Marie (Foto) Fetherston, and his brother Jack Fetherston. There will be no calling hours. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, August 17th at St. Mary Church, 942 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury. Burial with military honors will follow at 1:00 PM at Village Cemetery on Marsh Street in Wethersfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Farmington Volunteer Fire Department, 76 Main Street, Farmington, Connecticut 06032 who took great care to keep Bob safe.
