Obituary for
Lucia Maccarone (DeDominicis)
Lucia Teresa De Dominicis Maccarone, of Simsbury, passed from this life on January 24, 2017. She was the beloved wife of the late Justin S. Maccarone, Sr. for 58 years. Born in Hartford on October 3, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Teresa Parisi De Dominicis and William De Dominicis. Raised in Wethersfield, she graduated from Wethersfield High School in 1948. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics/Finance from Saint Joseph College in 1952, and a Master’s degree in Education from Trinity College in 1955. Lucia began her teaching career at Bloomfield High School, where she was affectionately known as “Miss D.” Later, she taught for 18 years at Lewis Mills High School in Burlington. She was a dedicated teacher, who was often referred to by students as their “school Mom.”
Family was the central focus of her life. As a child, she enjoyed many gatherings of her extended Italian family. As a young woman she worked for her father in his accounting business, which gave her an interest in the field. She followed in the footsteps of her mother, who was a teacher. After college, she met her future husband through the Catholic Graduates Club in Hartford. Together they made their home in Simsbury and raised four children, of whom she was very proud. While working full-time, she still managed to attend all her children’s athletic events and school activities. Upon retirement, she was able to spend time with her eight grandchildren, who were the joy of her life. In addition, she was able to pursue her passion of travel by taking many memorable trips with her husband. She also served as a volunteer at the Simsbury Public Library, helping to provide books to the homebound. She raised her children and grandchildren to have faith in God, to be honest and respectful, and to help others. She was the glue that held her family together. She was an amazing cook, who hosted many joyful family gatherings. She instilled in her children a love of family and the importance of continuing family traditions. She is survived by daughter Michele Maccarone Brophy and her husband, Kevin; son Justin Maccarone, Jr., and his wife, Marie; daughter Lisa Maccarone; and son Christopher Maccarone, and his wife, Lai. She will be deeply missed by her eight grandchildren who adore her: Joseph, Katherine, and Michael Maccarone, Abigail and Terrence Brophy, and William, Hannah, and Luciano Maccarone. Lucia is also survived by her sister Teresa Mascaro and her husband Carmen, brother Dr. William De Dominicis, and his wife Janice, her brother-in-law Armand Maccarone, and his wife Lorraine. In addition to her husband, Lucia was preceded in death by her brother-in-law Ralph Maccarone and his wife, Jane, and sister-in-law, Gloria. She also leaves many nieces and nephews, and Parisi and De Dominicis cousins.
