Obituary for Miriam Dorothy Cooper (Rubinstein)

Print
Miriam Dorothy (Rubinstein) Cooper, 98, wife of the late Charles Cooper, died Oct. 27, 2018 at her home in Simsbury, Conn.
She was born May 27, 1920 in Newark, N.J., the daughter of the late Samuel and Jennie (Nachtigall) Rubinstein. She lived in Larkspur, Calif. for 30 years prior to moving to Simsbury six years ago to be closer to her great-grandson and namesake, Cooper Mandel Brown.
Miriam attended Kean College in New Jersey and the College of Marin in California, where she pursued her lifelong passion for art and pottery. Her aesthetic sense extended beyond her love for the arts - she frequently crafted her own chic ensembles and outfitted family and friends with handcrafted creations.
Following her retirement from Beth Israel Hospital in Newark, N.J., where she worked as an executive assistant, Miriam travelled throughout the world. Her affinity for Asian arts and history led her on multiple excursions to the Near and Far East.
Above all, Miriam’s lifelong love for reading kindled many thoughtful conversations, centering on everything from art, music, politics, science, nature or the complete volumes of Proust. She remained articulate, insightful and engaged in current affairs.
She is survived by her two daughters, Dena Cooper Mandel and Robin Cooper, and their spouses, Robert Mandel and John Stone, of Simsbury, Conn., and Madison, Wisc., respectively. Her greatest happiness was spending time with her energetic great-grandson Cooper, son of her granddaughter Brynn Mandel and Michael Brown of Avon, Conn.
A springtime memorial will take place at the time of her interment in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery in Iselin, N.J. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Miriam Cooper to the Friends of the Corte Madera Public Library, Corte Madera Library, 707 Meadowsweet Drive, Corte Madera, CA 94925.
